We Play: For Those Who Love to Play

Can you guess what this is???

If you guessed a way of keeping a grumpy toddler amused for most of a day, you would be right. If you guessed a ‘fairy key,’ you would also be right 🙂

One morning this past weekend, Immy was a little upset that I would not let her keep locking and unlocking our sliding doors – not only as I was concerned about small fingers becoming jammed in doors being slammed but as she cannot actually reach the lock and was becoming increasingly frustrated that I did not want to lift her up to it every five seconds. We had just finished some free collage and so I decided a distraction was necessary and asked her to come into my study as I had an idea! She then helped me to make an impromptu fairy key from our assortment of collage materials. A popstick, two matchsticks, two foam flowers and before you know it you have an extra special, sparkly, tinkly fairy key which can magically open every door. Of course, for the rest of the day every time one of us needed to go in or out of a door Immy would run up and remind us that we needed our fairy key! Fortunately, a fairy key only needs to be pointed at a lock and ta-da, with a tinkle it is unlocked!!!

I have two favourite ideas from last week. The first is something I would never have thought of and looks like so much fun and the second is a great reminder about taking inside fun outdoors as a fresh way of enjoying outside playtime.

And now it is your turn, what have you been playing this week?

Full instructions for first time players can be found here. Please remember to link back to We Play in the body of your post 🙂 I would encourage you all to take the time to visit and comment on other We Play posts so that we can continue to build the play community. Thanks for playing again this week.

  1. I love the simplicity of this fairy key! I think we'll have to try it in our house, soon!

  2. I love the fairy key! Unfortunately, someone is big enough to open all the doors in our house (except the sliding door to come back inside) and is always being "helpful" letting the cat in or out.

  3. Ofcourse it is a fairy key……duh what else woud it be!! LOL

What a good idea! We have a key obsessed 2 year old, luckily she is happy with the old ones we've given her.

  5. What a cute fairy key! I just started reading your blog a few weeks ago, and just have to tell you how much I love it. I've gotten so many great ideas from you and others that share. I love that it's gotten me thinking differently about the way and the how of our play.

Thanks for mentioning my "Books Outdoors" post – what an unexpected and nice surprise.

  9. Oh I love the little Fairy Key idea, we will have to give that one a go! Thankyou so much for linking to our Moon Balloons game from last week, I hope you have as much fun as we did with them 🙂

  10. Very cute! 🙂 We had a transformed a star on a stick (from Linfors)made of wood into a fantastic wand with colors and bands of glitter.. lots of magic – until the dog ate it.
First link up to 'We Play', I hope the post isn't too 'texty' (but has photos!) 🙂

Wow, just finished reading all the posts for this week, what a playful lot you all are! Thank you for your kind words about our fairy key, it is amazing how children often most love the simplest of ideas and this one truly took just moments to create.
