9 Virtually Free Ideas for Family Fun at Christmastime

There are lots of ways to spend time together as a family in the lead up to Christmas which cost very little, which can only be a good thing given how much we spend in the lead up to the big day!

9 Virtually Free Ideas for Family Fun at Christmastime

1. Go for a drive in the evening to look at the homes adorned with Christmas light displays.

2. Attend a local community Carols by Candlelight.

3. Attend a Christmas pagent or parade.

4. Head into the city to look at the Christmas displays in the department store windows (and maybe sit on Santa’s knee while you are there!)

5. Hire a Christmas movie on DVD and stay in for a family movie night, popcorn essential!

6. Pull out a favourite board game and spend an afternoon playing together.

7. Head outdoors for some family fun time. You could try anything from a visit to the beach or the bush or even into the snow (depending which side of the world you are on!)

8. Cook or bake something Christmassy together. Gingerbread shapes, White Christmas, shortbread – there are so many yummy choices just a Google away. Make together to enjoy together or to give as gifts.

9. Create something Christmassy and crafty as a family. There really is no excuse as anyone can manage paper chains 🙂

Christmas is the perfect time to create family memories.

  1. Instead of driving around the neighborhood to see the lights' displays, we bundle up and head out on foot instead. It's chilly and gets us in the holiday spirit – and we like to finish with a cup of hot chocolate!

  2. Boardgames – I am such a fan. Growing up in (cold and dark) England meant that as a family, boardgames featured a lot.

We are going away this year, for Christmas, but I am tempted to take board games with us…

  3. These are all such great ideas! My little girl is still too young for anything like this but I look forward to the day when we can start some Christmas activities like this 🙂

  4. Have you been looking in our window? We've been doing our crafts, we've done some cooking (with more to come!), board games have been out most days, and we already have a large-ish collection of Christmas dvds. Our Carols are this weekend and I am trying to find out if there is an online resource for a good Christmas light display as we have not taken Princess to see one before. Your post certainly sounds like my life! LOL

Several years ago we too were driving around looking at lights when my then 5yr. old grandson began begging to sing Christmas carols at the next house we stopped in front of. The other two grandsons chimed in and before I knew it we jumped out of the car, knocked on a perfect strangers house and sang Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and Away in a Manger. About seven people came out of that house and even joined in on several carols. That was about 5 years ago and we now have a tradition of caroling at strangers homes as we enjoy the Christmas lights. 🙂 joyce
