A peek inside a reader’s play space…
I’m Jackie, and I run a home daycare. We spend a lot of time outdoors in good weather, and our playhouse, with a sandbox underneath has always been a favourite place to play. This past spring, after being inspired by the beautiful outdoor play spaces on Let the Children Play‘s blog, I realized that we could make it a much more inviting and stimulating space, so my family and I spent a weekend giving it an overhaul.
We cleaned it out, added a slide, a “kitchen” and some furniture. We made a geo-board, hung a clothes-line, and set up a work station with an old phone, key-board, a chalkboard and some writing materials. We cleared out the sandbox, and added some benches, and baskets of natural materials for the children to explore.
The playhouse is even more popular than before. Some days, the entire day is spent going between the sandbox and the playhouse. This space provides hours of wonderful imaginative play for the Hooligans.

What a wonderful cubby! So big and spacious, I could see sleepovers happening in there.

I have childhood memories from my outdoor playhouse and I know these children will too. Hours of fun and pretend make for happy children!
This is amazing – we’re redoing our gardens this year and want something similar for the children to play in out there.
