Our Play Space: Writing Centre & Atelier

A peek inside a reader’s play space…

Our family lives in Sydney, in a small home. We have four kids under four. I created a writing and art centre for them in a small space we had near our dining area, (probably only a metre wide and 3 metres long).

This area is a space where our children can initiate their own work because the things they need (like writing & art tools, paper, playdough, etc) are readily available and kept at their level. I’ve also tried to make it aesthetically pleasing – a place that is attractive to them – using good lighting and their own work to adorn the wall. Also, keeping as much of the furniture a neutral colour so their own work stands out was key.

With thanks to Pauline of Lessons Learnt Journal for sharing her family’s atelier with us. I love how it demonstrates that it doesn’t take much room to create a space perfect for children to ‘work’ in. You can see more detail of how Pauline has organised the space here.

Do you have a family or kids play space in your home that you love (indoors or outdoors)? Submit your play space here and you too could be featured on Childhood 101.
