The Power of Sharing Memories + Giveaway

Read on for your chance to win a fabulous Canon PIXMA printer.

When I was pregnant with AJ, and especially since she was born, Immy has asked A LOT of “When I was a baby” questions…

When I was in your tummy did you eat lots of french onion dip?

When I was a baby did I wear that? Play with that toy? Sleep in a crib? Go in that bath?

When I was a baby did you read that book to me?

I must admit to a mild dose of the guilts in response to these questions. Even though we answer honestly and talk about our memories of that time, I would love to also show her what life was like when she was a baby. After all, being a first born in this age of digital technology we have a million and one photos of Immy as a baby. In fact, pretty much every smile, gurgle and dribble was captured for prosperity! And for the first few months of her life I was even organised enough to jump online to have the best photos printed. I had grand plans to collate the photos with witty anecdotes of our lives together into a beautifully decorated scrapbook.

The reality ~ those photos were all still sitting in their packets in a box… in one of our storage cupboards, somewhere. Oops!

Fortunately, having a second baby (and all those questions) has been the impetus to spur me back into action, albeit a more practical, time conscious one. I asked for a Project Life binder, pages and journal cards for my birthday as it seemed a simple system that wouldn’t take as much time to organise or complete, thanks to pre-printed journalling cards, no sticking involved and decoration purely optional. My plan is to gather our family photos into one place with (short) lovingly crafted observations of everyday family life, or at least the details of who, what, when, where and why!

And the kick up the butt to finally get me started was the opportunity to review the Canon PIXMA MG6250 printer and a selection of Canon photo printing papers.

canon pixma printer

One of my first thoughts was to print the photos from my recent pregnancy journal. I used Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II and am really pleased with the results.

In fact, after also testing the Matte Photo Paper and the Photo Paper Plus Semi-Gloss, the high gloss is definitely my favourite – providing the best result for home photo printing on the PIXMA. I have tested printing from my laptop and directly from a memory card and both were super easy thanks to the PIXMA’s large instruction screen and easy touch, intelligent controls. But the PIXMA MG6250 doesn’t just print, it also includes an A4 sized scanner and copier.

Immy loves looking through the photos that I have added to the binder so far (and yes, I found the box of photos and have started showing her those from when she was a baby) and it has lead to lots of great conversations about our shared memories of recent events. I am really enjoying the process of putting the album together, it’s become a bit of a creative outlet for me. The simplicity of the Project Life binder and materials, and having the printer right there, makes it a great crafty project that I can come back to even if I have just five or ten minutes available.

Canon are on a mission to inspire parents to get crafty with their kids with the PIXMA Printables site. It’s jam packed full of easy to print games, models, activity sheets, recipes, charts and photo templates that kids will love.

Wow!! the photos look fantastic and I’m sure what everyone would love to do with their photos but never find the time. With my kids I’d love to make a week to week diary for them to share with their cousin (soon to be cousin’s’) that live in England. As we don’t see them often it would be nice to share something like a photo diary as a Christmas present.
I could go on and say I’d love to use it for work at my Pre School as well.
So many uses, so many reasons.

  2. Christine Sutton says:

Wow … who knew there were so many things that you could print and do with the kids on a printer. I would do lots and lots of the different projects because they all look so fantastic. The first thing that I would do though would be to the kids recipe book, because I think that it is important that children learn to cook. There are so many skills learnt in that project – maths, reading, cooking, communication skills, organisation skills etc etc. Love it!

  3. anne-marie seve says:

These all look like magic times to be had but gotta luv those ‘fun & games’ ideas – something for everyone! and lets face most can be done almost anytime, anywhere, inside or out! – take them on holidays, camping, in the car! little cost so if they get lost , no big drama! Use them at playgroup, for a party!! or just when the little ones are not feeling well . . . yaya!! ready made attention grabbers!

  4. I would love to create lots of fun things in the Print a Party section. Both my kids have birthday’s coming up and getting them in on the decorating action would make it that much more special and inclusive.

  5. What an amazing prize! Whilst I love all of the projects shown, I would have to pick ‘Fun with Photos’. I would love to make a special book for my daughter of her family tree. We don’t have a huge family left and so I’d love to create a special memories book that she can look back on and see pictures of Great Grandparents, Grandparents etc that are no longer with us. The Canon Pixma Printer would allow me to do such a book in a fun way and also where I can add lovely special words colours and pictures remembering them. We can also do fun pictures to send to Great Grandparents overseas that have yet to meet her.

  6. Pamela Baker says:

This printer looks amazing! There’s so many great ideas on their website. I’d definitely be doing something from the Cook with Kids section, probably the Cherry Frog cakes. I think cooking with your kids is fantastic, not only are you teaching them essential life skills, but you can easily incorporate all sorts of literacy and maths skills as you go.

  7. Penne Ann says:

Decorate the girls bedroom together and we would have a lot of fun doing it. The girls would be pleased at their handy work…I would be just the supervisor, of course. 🙂

  8. Master four loves craft…this morning we were glueing sequins onto a piece of foam to make a beautiful bed. (apparently that’s what it was)
I love the basketball game from the PIXMA site – master four’s dad would be happier too. (we don’t do stereotypes in this family. LOL)

  9. Samantha Savva says:

When my miss 4 was born we took every photo. However when she was 2 I lost almost all of them when the computer crashed! So I would LOVE to collate the photos I do have and create a special album JUST for her and do it with her! With bub #2 due in 7 weeks she is going to be VERY inquisitive about what it was like when she was born as well.

  10. I would love to get Project Life and get organised with my photos I have barely anything printed and in albums or on walls from the last 10 years – so lazy! My two cherubs (3 and 19 months) really deserve to be able to have albums to look at their childhood and family. Need to get off my bum and get organising but there are so many photos on the computer it’s hard to know where to start!

  11. Dude! That website totally rocks! Would have to attempt the Sea Creatures mobile as my daughter is OBSESSED with Nemo.

  12. I’ve love to make my twin boys the growth chart because they are growing wayyy too fast :), and some birthday printables for their 3rd birthday next year.

  13. Love this! For sure I need to ‘Get organised’ as we’re moving house soon and would love to start off on the right foot!

  14. I would love to make the recipes from the “cook with kids” section as my 4yr old has really gotten into helping me cook lately. Those gingerbread people look yummy!

  15. I would love this printer. I have been looking at the cannon photo printers recently because I have been wanting to create a special memory booklet for my 6 year old who rides a peewee 50 motorbike. So many wonderful images that he could show his class for show and tell. He would be so proud, and lets face it, children today seldom get print images, seems everything they look at is on a computer.

  16. Opps Canon not cannon silly auto correct…

  17. Melissa Foxx says:

My 6 year old daughter is all about making and sending cards to everyone at the moment. She would LOVE the Matryoshka Card Set (and probably most of the other cards too).

  18. Oooo, I want to print the solar system mobile! Miss Possum is SO into planets right now and I’ve been racking my brain on how to get one. Now I know.

  19. I had actually given up on printing photos as they just don’t seem to work well for me (a cheap printer doesn’t help of course!!!) I am like you and have many photos sitting doing nothing and not being seen. I have taken so many photos of my twins to share with family who all live interstate but have never found the time or inspiration to do anything with them!
That site is wonderful…..i would probably pick Fun with photos as we have so many family birthdays and events coming up that a beautiful and creative pic collage would be just perfect….and considering my 2 yr olds now love to look at themselves on the blog i think they would enjoy creating with me!!!
Thanks for the review…will be keeping it in mind and definitely be revisiting the site to play around!!

  20. Mary Preston says:

Looking through FUN WITH PHOTOS I thought of a gift for every member of our family – friends too – for Christmas. I love to plan ahead. We could have so much fun in the weeks & months leading up to December. Personal home-made gifts are always treasured.

  21. I’ve been wanting a Pixma printer for so long. I’ve been terrible at printing photos and only have my daughter’s first month in an a,bum. She loves looking at photos of herself as a baby and always requests the album to look at.

Just like your daughter Imy, my daughter is incessantly curious about what she did when she was a baby. This afternoon she wanted to know how she got out of my tummy. Not sure 4 and a half is the age you start explaining natural childbirth…

Of all the printables I think the solar system moile would be my first project. They have ‘Space Land’ set up at kinder this term and it’s been a great source of fascination.

  22. Great giveaway, thanks Christie!! I would choose from the ‘fun with photos’ section and help Max make a sweet little gift for his Grandma and Nonna.

  23. Gee there are so many great ideas! If I had a fab Pixima printer I’d start small by making a squirrel family mobile as our last mobile got broken yesterday. After the excitement of that I’d get organized & take on something more challenging from the fun with photos section.
Thanks for the competition opportunity 🙂

  24. I would love to have a quality printer to be able to make up photo books of each year of my twins lives and through our homeschooling journey. the photos look amazing.

    1. just spend 45 minutes fighting with the printer i have to print out 1 photo 🙁

  25. Hi, my son’s 3rd birthday is coming up and he wants a ‘train’ party. So I have been doing heaps of research wiht my older daughter (5) and we have found, invites, food labels, games, party favours all with a ‘train’ theme. My problem now is our current printer has a broken printhead! What to do!!!
Hopefully we can get a new Pixma to print all the goodies off!
    Thanks-you for the opportunity!

    1. I’d like to do the make a card, for my son’s birthday!

  26. With 2 autistic children in the house who respond amazingly well to visuals, I’m constantly needing to print photos and unfortunately, the quality of our current printer is, well…under par. It takes SO long to get the settings right and then it seems hit and miss as to whether or not you get a good print!
Our scanner is also busted which makes homeschooling a little trickier than normal at the moment. A Pixmar would be A HUGE HELP! It sounds like a fantastic machine 🙂
    Love your album too x

  27. Wow, I never knew you could do so much with a printer! I think the articulated ladder truck would be very popular in our house, and the Tyrannosaurus rex!

  28. Gaylene Walsh says:

As my daughter is now 10 years olds, she has lots of activities and things she needs to keep track of and what better wayfor her to stay organised than with the Cow Craft Calendar.

  29. Wow, where would I start?!?! The recipe cards are a great idea! And I do plan on being organised for Christmas this year with some photos of our little boy for people. Many many hours of projects there!

  30. My daughters both love decorating and changing their rooms around every couple of months. They would love the mobiles in the decorate a room section, especially the heart and rabbit one.

  31. Hi Christie!
    What an amazing giveaway.
I’ve been wanting to give shrinky-dinks a go with my kids (remember those?). With photos of us and make them into pendants for bracelets or necklaces. So we can be together wherever they go *smile*
I also have been wanting to create a photo wall for the longest time. All of our family, close and extended, and friends too. (They’re often our family too aren’t they?) The Canon MG6250 sounds as though the image quality would be perfect to help us do that too ღ
Lovely post. What a lot of fun it must have been to write!
    ♥ Aleta @ Hinterland Mama

  32. Alison Smith says:

I would love to use this to create the memory books that i am planning for my 2 sons every 5 years to document their lives, memories and development.
Thanks for this giveaway! Its pretty amazing.

  33. The Solar System mobile looks interesting and would be fun for the kids.

  34. Juliet Ranieri says:

I would create photo story albums with my toddler. We love going on walks together and I am always taking photos of things he wants to remember – from big, noisy rubbish trucks to delicate, fluffy wattle flowers blooming.
All these photos are currently stored on our computer and he loves scrolling through them, but their meaning would be amplified if we could print them and add some text to help us remember extra details.

  35. Naamah Newth says:

    Great giveaway!
I would use it to make the calendar photo board for Christmas presents. We have a lot of overseas family and this would be a much loved present.

  36. Amanda Hardy says:

Holy gosh, thanks for linking to that site. I was just looking at the Articulated Ladder Truck – that’s amazing! Its ladder can avoid toy powerlines, and you can put a straw in it to make an actual working hose! That’s incredible balance, the artist has obviously put a huge amount of thought into it.

I’ve been meaning to get a printer for forever, Matt has a game of Guess Who that I’ve been wanting to personalise with photos of family members and pets for Christmas – impossible to get the right size printouts at a photo centre, but on the computer I can play with it til I get it right.

Thanks for all the great ideas, and such a great giveaway! Amanda

  37. Wow, awesome prize!
Firstly we don’t have a printer and are in desperate need as my daughter is in Kindy and we have been printing off any work at my parent’s house, so this would be lovely to win!!
If we were lucky, I would love to do the card making activity with my daughter as she loves making home made cards and it would be great for both of us to get creative and design and make cards together for special people in our lives.
BUT, all of the projects are amazing and look like loads of fun 🙂
    THANK YOU!

  38. Hi there! Very amazing prize.
We only have a basic black and white printer so all of these projects excite me! I would love to do a photo album of my 2 beautiful boys to capture all these precious memories. But other than that, I would just enjoy being able to print in colour! Gifts, projects, cards……..Thanks!

  39. Wow I would love to have this because it means I might actually print out my photo’s instead of just storing them on the hard drive for years and years.
Having something physical to look at is so much nicer than just flicking through images on a computer.

I would love to create a memory book for my kids so they can have something to keep with them for years and look back on how much fun they had growing up.

  40. Ice Age party printables so we could have a freezingly awesome birthday party

  41. Melissa Wilkes says:

We like to take photo’s its part of the time we spend together as Mum and Son, since Mitchell was five we have walked and wandered looking for the weird and wonderful and that’s what we decorate our walls with, it would be wonderful to have a printer that does that job well because ours has definitely passed its use by date..

  42. Hi Christie . What a fantastic prize! I would like to use the printer for both documenting my 3 boys growing up, craft projects and being able to use it for blogging purposes. Our printer only prints properly in black & white. The colour cartridges never seem to print clearly.

  43. My son goes to daycare, and they have made a scrapbook of pictures of him at daycare. He is so in love with this book all about himself, and I would so love to be able to create a scrapbook for him. Im sure he would absolutely adore it, and we could create some wonderful memories making it together.

  44. A mess, but a fun one:0
    Creations, smiles and elations

  45. I would choose the Decorate A Room projects and would have special fun creating the Growth Chart.

  46. roberto colombi says:

Cook with kids – it’ll be our Recipe for fun and give us plenty of Food for thought!

  47. Hayley Munro-Lynch says:

I’d like to create a photo wall, I have a spare room in my house which is going to waste, I’d love to stick photos on massive posters and paintings my son has done, which make the room look amazing, this printer would make it so much easier.

  48. Dawn Taylor says:

I know this is a great giveaway, but I’d have to have someone very patient to show me how it does everything. at the moment it has me completely bushed. I thought printers just printed out letters, forms and things.

  49. lynne lillington says:

I get them to help make a memory book, I want to doucument our family tree , and print photos, documents and letters of our family heritage. So many stories are lost with every generation that dies. Getting the kids to help will help them understand not only what life was like for their ancestors, but visually see who they were . My PIXMA prints would a become valuable part of our family history.

  51. Glenis Okeefe says:

What a great little machine and toolbox – the kids ands I will make up a family tree book as I feel that it is important for them to kinow where they came from and as much about their ancestors that we can currently pass on. If we don’t record these treasured memories now they may get lost forever. To involve the kids with this project will be a great little family adventure!

  52. Lesley Ann Walker says:

We are trying to make a large family tree with photo’s of Ancestors, their homes, their graves & more with may colours we will be able to make our tree grow like the tree will look alive which will have been made with love, fun & excitement while learning about our loved ones

  53. I’ve always wanted to create a timeline showing all the advances our little man is making as he strives to adapt to having cerebral palsy. Just to see the great (and not so great) moments will show just how much of a little fighter he is.

  54. I would pick ‘Fun with photos’ my little one could make so many things for her grand parents, great grand parents, cousins and her Aunties and Uncles. 55. I would love to create be able to create party invites for my little ones!

  56. Anjanette Fennell says:

I would LOVE to make a couple of projects with my boys…

First, the Solar System mobile as they love talking about the planets & space. And I love being able to combine creative fun with educational tidbits!

Next, I’d love to make the Butterfly mobile (and have my boys help) as I’m currently pregnant with a much anticipated little girl…it’s the first time I get to be super-girly and use pinks, purples, butterflies & hearts! Yay!! LOL

  57. Ying Ying TAN says:

Coming from a massive Asian family, I would really like to create a ‘Family Tree’ scrapbook with my little Princess and present it to my Grandparent’s 50th Wedding Anniversary next year. This printer will be extremely useful for printing great quality photos and designs for the book =)

  58. Similar to you photo organisisation is the project I would tackle. My first born’s photos still need doing and with the second baby on the way feeling more and more guilty that I haven’t got around to it. This would certainly be the motivation I need!

  59. We would create the print a party printables. My little girls birthday is coming up so would be very handy indeed!

  60. Laticia Cox says:

It’s 2012 and I have sd cards from 2009 that I haven’t printed yet because I can never find time to go to the shops and look through them without having to run after my toddler. To sit down with hubby and reminisce on those last few years would be great for scrap booking.

  61. A super special calendar, with pictures of friends and family on their birthdays and lots of other fun pics and happy snaps throughout, so we never forget a thing or anyone on their special day.

  62. Party invitations. We can all let our enormous imaginations run wild and create invites to be the envy of all the other Mums 🙂

  63. Home made cards, in bright, bold, vibrant colours, for each and every occasion, personalised to perfection. Saying exactly what needs to be said, not what Hallmark deem fit.

  67. Jennie Dimas says:

Winning the Canon PIXMA printer would mean more 101 time for me and my children. So many projects we could work on together and print but without a printer at home it is not possible. If we won, our first project would be to make a PHOTO-COLLAGE of their GRANDMA for her 84th birthday and may be even start on our family tree, then there’s homework that could be printed at home too…… the possibilities are endless with the Canon PIXMA!

  68. My little girls would just love to create the Tiaras with me! Their birthday is coming up and they have already advised me that they want a princess theme. These tiaras would be absolutely perfect as party hats, and my girls and I will have so much fun making them!

AND create a very personalised work of art,
For their sibling to one day treasure and own,

This keepsake book is sure to thrive love and joy,
As we cleverly and creatively prepare for the life of 2 girls and a boy!

  74. Michelle Gray says:

With my daughter I would love to create a “Print a party”, what a fantastic way to get her involved with the preparations for her 5th birthday. We could start with a countdown calender and as the date got closer create the invitations. For the day we could make banners, placements and party hats, sounds like a fantastic idea.

  75. Lani Kennedy says:

We have a lovely veggie garden, in which all the kids enjoy having their own sections. Id love to print up their edible results !!

  76. kay brymer says:

  78. Awesome prize, just love the “decorate a room”,master 4 has been asking for his name to go on his door, this would be perfect

  79. Wow so many Uses not only Practical for everday work uses the Decorate a room would be great with our renovation plans and the girls can even plan their own style. Love it

  80. So many great ideas! I would love to do the picture matching for my daughter- and I think the theme would be my favourite things. We could take the photos together- and pick the subjects together.
It could start off as basic- so matching a photo of a mandarin with a mandarin (her fave food) of a pic of Nanna with another pic of Nanna, and then mix it up a little as she progresses: matching which things go together- so a photo of Nanna goes with Grandad, or the dog goes with the ball. I think this could also produce some unexpected results such as grandad with the dog as he loves dogs- letting her creativity and storytelling run wild.
We could then also use the cards to say which thing is not like the others, so 3 pieces of food and perhaps a photo of her cousin.
    The possibilities are endless!!!!!!

  81. Michele L says:

My little ones are one and three years old. They would love to do the character colouring sheets of Ice Age 4.

  82. Jodie Taylor says:

I also do project life, for the same reason as you I have 3 kids and when my 3rd one came along after a 7 year gap, I still had my second childs photos sitting in the scrapbook room in a box!! I would choose to do the Owl card set with the kids and send it to their Grandma in the USA, she loves getting cards from the kids.

  90. The children and I would help my Nana (their great Nana or ‘Old Nana Pat’) to make her cookbook. Years ago she started to write out all her recipes for her grandchildren (of which their are 13) and now she has five great grandchilren to! Her progress was slowed down by macular degeneration so we have told her we’d like to help her finish the books. With a printer like this and the scanner we could make some great books and still have it in her handwriting. This would be a fabulous opportunity for both my little family am extended relatives.

  91. Amy Ginis says:

We would make cards for Daddy!

  92. We are in the middle of making a Family and Me tome. A collection of pictures and interviews with our older and young family members about how life was growing up, their favourites times in life and compiling them all together. I would like to think our older generations will live on forever if only just in print and create a long lasting treasure for my kids.. kids.. kids!

  93. Linda Hynson says:

Love the idea of a picture journal!!!

  94. I’d love to put together a travel journal for my four and six year old with photos, maps and their momentos. Would just be great to add their words underneath!

We live intserstate . Its been hard to adjust.
What a a great way to catch up!!

  96. Jean Rutherford says:

Having fun with photos would include creating collages of family and friends, everything from the wild and wacky to the more formal and proper.

  97. Toni Crawford says:

Hi, I love the fun With Photos projects. I am in the process of creating MILESTONES AND MEMORIES Albums for my son to look back on. I only have a handful of photos from when I was a baby myself as Mum never owned a camera. Relatives were kind enough to supply them to me after much searching. I want our son to be able to look back on his life through photos and journalling as we all know that the memory can fail us and age is not the only reason for this. Life just keeps getting busier and it is important to stop and take the time to record the simple moments as they are the ones that often we hold closest to our hearts. I hope that through my passion for scrapbooking my son will also enjoy craft and the fun that can be created with photos.

  98. Anything colourful

  99. Anything from the Ice Age 4 range! Oh my so many things to choose! My little boy (2.5) would go acorn’s (get it? from the movie? hehe) to colour in characters from his favourite movie!

  100. Kirsten W says:

I would like to do the Ice Age party project. With both my kid’s birthdays coming up soon, and having recently see the movie, the kids would love it! Party printables, invites, party hats, you name it, it’s there. The part I like the most however is the Ice Age 4 Job Chart! I’ll definitely be printing that up!

  101. WITH MY PARENTS PERMANENTLY MOVING OVERSEAS SHORTLY, A TREASURE TROVE OF MEMORIES I’D LOVE TO CREATE WITH MY CHILDREN AS A PARTING GIFT FOR THEM. THIS IS THEN SOMETHING THAT WE CAN ADD TO OVER THE YEARS AND FORWARD ‘UPDATES’ TO THEM AS THEY ARE SUCH IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN MY CHILDREN;S LIVES, AND MINE TOO OF COURSE!! WHAT A FUN AND EXCITING PROJECT IT WOULD BE!!

  102. Falon Downing says:

I would make a family calendar from the ‘fun with photos’ section. We always seem to be running around in circles trying to remember what to do — and it’s a nice reminder that it’s all worthwhile! 🙂

  103. Kristina Snowden says:

My oldest is likely to be going to be changing schools next year after going K-5 at the school she loves but not looking like I can continue to taxi to and from anymore so I would love to make a large framed collage of her and her friends with the pics ive taken over the years

  104. Cheryl McKibbin says:

A family bucket list – we each choose 5 activities we want to do and work our way through them 🙂

  105. We would have Fun With Photos, making a great momento of our upcoming holiday to New York – mum, dad, master 4, miss 2 and twin masters 5 months.

  106. Michelle @ Blundermum says:

The craft calendar with photos – Miss 5 is always asking whose birthday is next, and what should she make them. With a calender by her bedside she can plan her crafts (back to the PIXMA printables of course) and even change the photo each month to the preferred birthday star.

  107. I’d love to make a collage of my kids of them growing up, sounds fun and a great project to do together.

  108. Miss FiFi says:

There are many jobs where I could put the PIXMA to good use and I’m thinking of that box of photos under the stairs that leers at me. But I’d start with the excellent Ice Age 4 Job Chart sheet. What genius to help organise and motivate the kids (and myself) and it will only costs a few cents of paper and ink!
