An Invitation to Play: Flower Shop

This invitation to play flower shop was so simple to set up and my girls are loving it.

The fabulous thing about it – you can do just a little or a little bit more and regardless of which approach you take, your children’s imaginations will take your ideas and increase them tenfold, in directions you could never imagine.

Start with a table, artificial flowers (ours were in presented in small white pots) and a few tall, acrylic tumblers to act as vases. Our flowers came in bunches and I simply cut the individual stems off each bunch. If this leaves a thin, exposed wire just wrap each end with a little electrical tape.

Employ your five year old to create a homemade flower shop sign and, but only if you want to go all out, create a shop awning from a cardboard box. If you check out my previous cardboard box projects, you’ll see that coloured or patterned self adhesive book covering works a treat for adding life to cardboard boxes. Wrapping paper also works well.

On discovering the invitation, Immy immediately set about arranging flowers.

And then the magic happened. They played together, added to what I had started, and made it their own. Immy found the cash register and a purse.

And AJ grabbed a watering can and started watering the arrangements.

Just be aware that with this invitation to play, everyone will be invited to the store to make regular purchases! Hope those flowers are for me, Dad 101!

  1. I love this idea! My favourite part is that they’re learning so much through this play and they don’t even realise. It also helps that it’s so beautiful 🙂

  2. Last weekend my Miss 6 busied herself collecting flowers around our garden. She has her own child sized garden snips and she knows which flowers she’s allowed to access! She then cut strips of ribbon and tied up lots of little posies. She made a sign, ‘Flowers for Sale $1’, gathered up her posies in a basket, a little plastic chair and headed for the top of our street (closely followed by her dad who was instructed to sit a suitable distance away while supervising her!) she sat up there for an hour, unfortunately no customers:(
She still made use of her posies by taking them for her teacher on the Monday but it would have made her au if she could have made a sale!
