For the last couple of years, my children and I have enjoyed making simple edible gifts for friends and teachers. I like edible gifts because they are inexpensive, provide children with the opportunity to get busy in the kitchen, and really help them to appreciate the spirit of giving.
My children are always so proud of their little edible gifts too. Last year we made gingerbread and this year we have made some very simple and delicious chocolate crackles.
These chocolate crackles aren’t your traditional crackles; no copha here, just melt and mix. Easy. I also like to use puffed rice instead of rice bubbles. You can buy puffed rice from the health foods aisle of the supermarket. They are 100% rice and so are less processed and do not include sugar or salt which makes for a slightly less naughty chocolate crackle.
This recipe is so simple that, with a little preparation, your children will be able to make these delicious chocolate crackles all by themselves!
Deliciously Simple Chocolate Crackles Recipe
You will need:
- 3 cups of puffed rice
- 1 family block of milk chocolate
- 1 cup of coconut
These measurements really are approximations, you really only need enough melted chocolate to coat the mixture.
Prepare all your ingredients beforehand. This takes a lot of the stress out of cooking with children. If you have older children they can measure out the ingredients themselves, for younger ones like mine, I like to measure most of the ingredients before we start.
Step 1: Melt the chocolate.
Step 2: Pour the puffed rice into the melted chocolate.
Step 3: Add the coconut.
Step 4: Mix until all the puffed rice and coconut are covered.
Step 5: Scoop out into patty pans/cupcake liners.
Step 6: Pop them in the fridge until they are set.
Once set, stack two or three on top of each other and wrap in cellophane. A simple and delicious edible gift.
