Chocolate Crackles Recipe

Chocolate Crackles are pretty much the figurehead of traditional kids party foods in Australia. The traditional recipe was first published by the Australian Women’s Weekly back in the 1930s and I have vivid memories of eating them as a party food when I was a child in the 70s. Truly, a birthday party is not a birthday party without chocolate crackles!

Now having a child with food intolerance sometimes makes these classic childhood foods a bit more of a challenge but I quite enjoy the challenge of adapting recipes to suit her needs while still providing her with a classic childhood experience. These chocolate crackles are a case in point. While they still contain sugar, and so can not be truly defined as ‘healthy,’ I have adapted the traditional recipe to be a little healthier (with less sugar) and a lot less processed.

And you know what, when I served these at a recent birthday party not one of the adults who grew up with the traditional Chocolate Crackle recipe could even tell the difference.

For those catering for children with food allergies or intolerance, this recipe can be made is egg, dairy, corn and nut free and can be made gluten free as well (please see allergy notes below).
