Kids Art Ideas: Sharpie & Foil Embossing

I’m all about simple art projects, and it’s a definite bonus when the results look as impressive as these Sharpie & Foil Embossed Artworks do.

I’ve been wanting to try using foil in our arts and crafts for a while, and I just love how this project turned out. Foil embossed art is great for making with school aged children, and you might be inspired by our summery designs or try a design of your own for a truly unique piece of art. No matter what design you work with, the combination of foil with bright colours makes the completed artwork look amazing!

How to Make Embossed Foil Art

You will need:

  • Permanent markers in bright colors (we particuarly love these Sharpie markers)
  • Cereal box
  • White craft/school glue
  • Aluminum foil
  • Paintbrush
  • Yarn/wool
  • Scissors

To make:

1. Cut the cereal box into your desired shape. We started with rectangles.

2. Draw the outline of your design onto the cardboard with glue. We made a sun design and a wave design perfect for summer, but you can let your imagination go wild with abstract designs or try creating an image related to a theme you are investigating at home or school.

3. Cut pieces of yarn and place over the glue lines. Let dry.

4. Trim any excess yarn hanging off over the edge of the cardboard.

5. Cut a piece of foil about 5cm/2in larger than your cardboard piece.

6. Lay the foil shiny side down on a flat surface and cover with glue. We used a paintbrush to spread the glue.

7. Place your cardboard yarn side down onto the glued foil.

8. Flip the foil over. Carefully smooth the foil into the gaps between the yarn using the end of the paintbrush. Don’t press too hard or you will rip the foil. Start from the middle and work your way out to the edge of the paper.  When you’re satisfied, fold the edges of the foil over the back of the card and glue down.
