Art projects for kids: Modelling Clay Pictures via Childhood 101

One of the things I love about process based art projects is that it is so simple to involve children of all different ages. Toddlers will most often respond with a more basic sensory exploration of the materials whilst preschoolers and school aged children can be challenged to represent their thoughts, feelings and ideas with greater levels of detail, depending upon their age and stage of development. This modelling clay art for kids activity is one such project as you will see below.

Making Modelling Clay Pictures

Recommended age: Toddlers and up

You will need:

  • Coloured plasticine or modelling clay. We buy the packs of sticks in multiple colours.
  • Thick box cardboard

To make:

Modelling clay or plasticine is great for making colourful pictures.

Break off small pieces of selected colours one at a time and cup them or knead them in your hands to warm and soften the pieces.

Form selected shapes with fingers and hands and press onto the cardboard to form the picture.
