I am a big fan of organizing kids toys into individual baskets or bins of like items rather than putting everything in one big toy box. I believe the process of sorting and returning belongings to their correct basket at pack away time helps children learn about being organised.

Labelling the bins is essential to helping children learn to maintain the system of organisation. When labelling toy bins it helps to have both an image with an accompanying word so that both pre-readers and early readers can learn to be more independent in looking after their belongings.

This set of 28 toy labels does just that. It is available to you as a free printable, with download and printing instructions included below. The set includes a few different variable for similar items, so you can choose which labels suit your system of organisation best. Once printed and laminated (or covered with clear plastic book covering), use clear tape to adhere to plastic bins or tubs or punch a hole in each corner and add string or twine to tie the label to the basket.

  1. These are great! I think pictorial labels are fabulous for little people to find just what they want. And a great way to learn words too!

  2. Very cool idea! I really want to do this as I am tired of the disorganized toys

    1. I find it is so much easier to maintain (for both me and Immy) when everything has a clear home, Caz 🙂

  3. Christie, this is so great. I just need t know how to stick them on without blue tack because the twins keep eating it! I just adore how you made these too, including Immy in the fun!

  4. So lovely of you to make your labels available to everyone, love the idea of the photoshoot, I’ve been labelling and letting the children draw their own pics but will definitely give this a go, will make include the photoshoot as that sounds fun x

  5. These are awesome! Thanks for offering the printable.

  6. These are great, thanks for sharing! I really like using photos instead of pictures to help children organize their toys. I think it’s much more clear. The only suggestion I have is to make the labels without a capital letter at the beginning. I teach K-3, and I encourage the children to use the words they see around the room in their writing. I find when I have a lot of words that are capitalized, the children think they are always written that way, and we end up with capital letters at the beginning of all words.

  7. Fantastic! I could use these. I need a Lego one (or two or three) too though! Thanks for sharing x
