Dress Ups: Winging It

Do you ever come across a project online that you just have to try? Right then?

Bird wings costume | Childhood 101

When I saw this tutorial at Prudent Baby for dress up wings (found thanks to the wonderful Artful Parent – you are all following Jean’s blog, aren’t you?), I knew we just had to make a set of wings.  My mother-in-law was visiting and between the two of us (with Immy’s *help*) we managed to whip up a set of rainbow wings in record time.

I made a bit of a variation to the pattern, adding some elastic arm loops instead of the neck ribbon. Immy loves them and so do I (how I dream of an adult sized set of wings all of my very own!)

What project has recently inspired  you to action?

  1. Oh I love them! Except I can not sew! 🙁

  2. What cool wings! I’ll bet she had a great time with them.

  3. Oh! I think Isaw these on pinterest and fell in love, but, like Lori, I don’t sew (or at least, I haven’t in over 20 years, and I barely passed my classes in school!) However, I am hoping that for Christmas, at the latest, I will have my own machine and will be learning. So maybe I will give these a go before Miss 4 gets too old to enjoy them 🙂

    They are very lovely 🙂

  4. They are the best set of wings I have ever seen! May just try to make some for my nieces upcoming 5th birthday! Love your blog! Rach x

  5. I’m going to pop a pic on my blog with reference back to you – hope that is okay. Can take it down if not. Rach

  6. These are just adorable!! You could be bird, butterfly, fairy or anything you imagined! Might just have to check out that tutorial… and pass it on to someone who could make them like Granny!

  7. What beautiful wings, what a nice project for a family to do – Nanny, Mum and Immy – lovely memories to help when you fly.

  8. Oh they are gorgeous, can I order a set in pink to match my hair… 😀

  9. Oh! Beautiful.
Think I’ll go clean off my sewing table. 😉

  10. Oh my. These are BEAUTIFUL.
Tempted to whip up a few sets for my preschool, but I might make some for my own girls first, even though they are on the older side. There is still some room for beautiful dress ups in the 7-9 set.

      1. I ended up making two pairs for my girls, who have barely taken them off since.
The other teachers at preschool love them too, but it may be a while before I get around to making some for the preschool.

  11. I’d need 15 pairs of wings – can you whip some up for me? LOL
These are great – dramatic play is such a wonderful part of child development and these would certainly entice hours of play! Cute!

  12. These are beautiful…going to try them for sure. Thanks for sharing the inspiration. Your blog is wonderful, I’m bookmarking and sharing!

  13. My son declares your wings to be butterfly wings and keeps asking to see them. Thank goodness he hasn’t asked me to make him a pair because I already spent yesterday’s nap making bird wings!

  14. These are priceless. I can see why you would want a pair, too! My daughter would love to have a pair of these. I sew so well by hand, but I am somehow very inept at the sewing machine. I have one, but it kind of scares me and I don’t know where to start. I think it’s going to eat my finger. I am hoping to take some sewing lessons to learn how to use it.

I suppose, of course, these could be made by hand…..

  15. These are gorgeous Christie. My girls had a fairy party yesterday – wish I had been able to catch up on my blog reading prior to it so I had seen these!

  16. Really, truly. On my very first visit I would *find* this brilliant post. I need an adult size pair.

Your blog is so very bright and ‘read-able’ and I have much to learn from the glorious layout and design.

Congrats on such a terrific resource!!
