Kids Art: Stained Glass Contact Collage

I was recently inspired by this gorgeous tissue paper window collage featured on the wonderful blog, Filth Wizardry. Whilst I love their window a lot, I didn’t think Immy had the concentration to do such an enormous, and potentially toddler messy, project justice. Then I had the idea to create a simpler, quicker, toddler version using clear Contact paper as the adhesive rather than glue.

Starting out with tissue paper shapes and coloured cellophane squares, and spontaneously singing, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” as she went 🙂
Reaching high to cover all of the Contact.
Checking out the world through the coloured cellophane pieces.
The clouds blew away and the sun came out to check our progress.
Finished!

It was quick and easy and not at all messy – the perfect way for a toddler and a mama to pass the morning away!

What a great idea! I have saved all my cellophane from the quality street candies (from last Christmas…lol) and now I know what to do with them! Thanks!

A great idea! I have been looking back at the one at Filthy Wizardry and wondering if I would get away with glue on the windows (I have a wonderful principal but a bit over the top with 'neatness' unfortunately) and also wondered if in the heat here (44C/105F) whether the glue would soon peel or flake. This would solve both of those problems. And when removed, the decorated contact sheet could be backed with another sheet of contact to make table top covers or a divider, or cut up into smaller pieces (A4 size?) for using with whiteboard markers. I am inspired – thank you 😀

Great adaptation. Like Immy, I don't think my lil man is quite up to the Filth Wizardry version, but this is doable! Now to gather the materials…

  6. If I could go to the store right now I would get the tissue paper! This is great! I can't wait to try it.

I've been trying to hunt down something like 'GelGems' in Australia to make window mosaics, and then I remembered you had something like this on your site. So glad I found it! I think your idea is just as wonderful, and we can do it with craft stuff we already have.

During our science period,my children choose dry leaves from garden and placed them on a “Heart”shaped contact paper. They place it on a window on top of the classroom door.
We decided every time we go out,and see the heart, we will remember to take care of nature. It turned into a very special moment very close to Earth Day!!
