Our Christmas Reading Pile: Picture Books

Here are some of the Christmas themed picture books Immy is enjoying right now…

Christmas Wombat, Jackie French & Bruce Whatley, 2011
Immy is already a big fan of the quirky Diary of a Wombat and Diary of a Baby Wombat and was excited to receive Christmas Wombat this week.  It offers a very funny look at Christmas from a low-to-the-ground, Wombat perspective.

Olive, The Other Reindeer, J. otto Selbold, 1997
“Olive… the other Reindeer… I thought I was a dog. Hmmm, I must be a Reindeer!” And so Olive sets off to the North Pole to help Santa and the reindeer bring Christmas to the world.  And thankfully, her help is just what they need!

Merry Christmas, Splat, Rob Scotton, 2009
Has Splat been good enough this year to receive a really big present? After a last minute flurry of helpful activity goes wrong, he is doubtful and decides to wait up for Santa who never comes…or does he?

The Night Before Christmas Pop Up Book, Clement Clark Moore, Illutrated by Lee Krutop, 2006
The gorgeously, detailed pop up illustrations bring this version of the classic poem to life. Plus there is a surprise hiding in Santa’s sack right at the end.

A Christmas Story, Brian Wildsmith, 1998
The Christmas Story told through the eyes of Rebecca, friend to Mary and Joseph, who journeys from Nazareth to Bethlehem with a baby donkey pining for his mother. With touches of ‘real’ gold in the illustrations on every page, this version of the story hves really captured Immy’s interest.

What is on your child’s Christmas reading pile?

  1. Gutted because Christmas Wombat isn’t available in UK Amazon! I’ll have to keep searching

  2. My son (3.5) reads me Spot’s Christmas every morning. And today we opened up a new book – Merry Christmas Little Mouse. Love the illustrations.

  3. Our Christmas books have been wrapped up and we’re unwrapping and reading a new one every day at the moment. I think my favourites are Wombat Devine, Angelina’s Christmas and Olivia helps with Christmas. There are Splat lovers in this house so I think I’ll pop over to the library catalogue and put Merry Christmas Splat on hold while I remember!

    1. I will have to see if our library can get in Angelina’s Christmas, it would be a sure hit here!

  4. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Dr Seuss)
The Australian Twelve Days of Christmas (illustrated by Heath McKenzie)
    Wombat Divine (Mem Fox)
The Book of Finnish Elves (Mauri Kunnas) – this isn’t specifically Christmas, but was a Chrissy gift, and only comes out for December.

    1. Oooh, I must seek out our copy of the Grinch. It is one Immy loves any time of year!

  5. We have an old family tradition of Santa Mouse by Michael Brown. There are actually 3 stories or books in the Santa Mouse Treasury. We also like a newer one, Santa Duck

  6. We used to love Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas as kids! I wonder if it’s still in print?

    1. I remember loving that book too, Daisy. I might see if our library can get a copy in!

  7. We have dug out our Christmas themed books from our collection and they include:
‘The Church Mice At Christmas’ by Graham Oakley
‘Merry Christmas Maisy’ lift-the-flap book by Lucy Cousins
    ‘Mr Christmas’ by Roger Hargreaves
‘Santa’s Toy Shop’ Little Golden Book
‘The Berenstain Bears Trim the Tree’ lift-the-flap book by Jan & Mike Berenstain
‘The Santa Claus Book’ by Eileen Daly
All these books were bought from the op shop throughout the year for next to nothing, as I just love to find Christmas related story books from the op shop any time of year!
Another book we love but don’t own, although frequently borrow from the library, is ‘Dear Santa’ by Rod Campbell.

  8. We love books! The Christmas Wombat book looks cute 🙂 We have a christmas version of I SPY which my daughter really likes.

  9. We loved the Christmas Wombat too. This year’s favourites (so far) Fancy Nancy Splendiferous Christmas, There was an old woman who swallowed a star and Merry Christmas, Blue Kangaroo.
