Our Play Space: Our Chill Out Corner

A peek inside a reader’s play space…

Instead of using a traditional time out that isolates the child I have made a calming “Chill Out” space in our house where my son can go to recentre, reconnect, calm down and simply chill out. The space is full of calming smells, colours and activities, as well as some that help release pent up emotions.

The basic idea is that it will help diffuse situations before they escalate into chaos and it will provide an appropriate avenue for release of pent up emotions or frustration and teach that its ok to feel that way, but you have a choice what to do with these feelings. It is a relaxed atmosphere with activities, sounds, objects and smells that help relax the mind.

Read more about this remarkable space, here at Adventures At Home With Mum. Renee’s post includes a great list of suggestions for items to keep in a Chill Out Space.

  1. Big movement in the psychology/parenting world away from “Time Outs” and twds Co-Regulation/teaching and supporting children to learn how to calm down and manage their feelings in a positive way. You may like to look for the book Time In parenting by Otto Weiniger. And there is an excellent parenting program coming out of the attachment research called the Circle of Security Parenting program. Both support the idea of Time IN, co regulation and supporting a child to learn to calm down, “loaning them your strength” etc
