Stained Glass Christmas Cookies Recipe for Cooking with Kids

You will need:

To make:

1. Make your cookie dough and refridgerate according to the Kidgredients recipe.

2. First you will need to crush your boiled lollies. We placed a handful of each colour – red, green and yellow, into individual press seal plastic bags. Seal each bag. Place one bag at a time onto the counter atop a kitchen towel and bread board and hammer away! My girls both had lots of fun hammering but did need some assistance to really crush the lollies up.

3. Take your rolled and refrigerated dough and cut your large cookie shape from the dough with a cookie cutter. You will need to find two cutters that fit well together or use a set of nested cookie cutters. All of the cutters we used were from separate sets. Place the cookie onto your baking tray lined with baking paper.

4. Use a smaller cookie cutter to cut a window in the centre of the larger cookie shape. We baked the small stars cut from the centre as well but you could also re-use the dough to make more large cookies. Fill the window with the crushed lollies.

5. Use a drinking straw to make a hole for your cookies and milk straw to fit through. You will need to make the hole much larger than your drinking straw as the cookies will spread as they cook. A few of my holes were too small but it was easy to chip away the excess cookie with a toothpick once baked. The hole is also important if you want to make cookies to hang on your Christmas tree.

We also made angels with heart shaped cut outs. We decided not to include holes for straws in our angels.

6. Bake according to the Kidgredients recipe. The crushed lolly should be melted and the biscuits lightly golden. Cool on the baking tray for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

These cookies make a delicious afternoon tea snack when served with a glass of milk! Enjoy!
