We Play: For Fresh, Fun, Family Play Ideas

Recently we started to teach Immy how to play Concentration with a modified set of Wiggles cards. At the moment we only use about 8 pairs instead of the whole pack and, as this is the first time she has ever played a game involving turn taking, we just play turn about without the extra turns when you make a pair. Though it wont be long until we are using the whole deck, Immy is great at remembering where each card has been found, outsmarting Dad 101 or myself on more than one occasion!
I love the mobility of card games (especially on holidays), it is so easy to keep a pack of cards in your bag to bring out whenever the need for playful distraction is required. Or in the case of the photos above, perfect for taking a break from a painting project (for Facebook fans, that is a sneak peek of the new green study that you can see, I told you it was bright!) For other games great for developing short term memory, check out this post from the archives.

Favourite posts from last week…
Marita’s choice (found here) certainly makes learning fun and turns things upside down and around about!
Amanda’s pick is here, thanks to a fab set of blocks and an amusing story 🙂
And I love this post as it is all about creating memorable childhood moments, and that is what I am all about.

With just a few days left for voting, if you have not yet done so I would really appreciate two clicks of your time to vote for Childhood 101 as Kidspot’s Top Blog.

Sending love and hugs for a playful week ahead,
Christie xx

  1. We have 2 sets of Dora cards that we play this with, sometimes adding them together and making it really big. We also have a dinosaur set where you get a type of dinosaur card (meat eater, air/water, that kind of thing. We usually play a 2 person game, so get 2 type cards each) and choose one card each time. I like this one as older kids can learn about different types of dinosaurs, but younger kids can go by the colour edging of the card. Lastly, we have a Charlie and Lola set. These cards are teeny, tiny and theere are so many of them! Whilst I love C&L, I really don't like these cards!

Love that shade of green! 🙂 Makes me want to paint our office/craft room/learning space when we eventually move into it!

Learning to take turns is so important. My girls love memories games and are both very good at them. We found an iPhone app that is a kids memory game – very handy for times when we are stuck in the car somewhere.

  3. We have Pooh Bear cards that we use for memory games for Ellie, she loves it.

We've been playing Memory this week too! and with 8 pairs as well. B is great at turn-taking and remembers the items so well he's prone to "help" his opponent (me or grandma). We're tring to teach him to go after the card he's least sure about first, to leave him more options if it turns out to be not as expected, but he's not quite grasping that concept yet…

Memory is such a great game for so many reasons. We've been playing it a lot latey too, so much so that it had to go back into the box part of our toy rotation for a while. (for my own sanity!) Miss H wants to play games like this over and over.

Love the green wall Christie. You were right about Shrek feeling at home but I bet it looks fantastic with your home furnishings.
