An Untidy Confession…

Late this afternoon I really needed a nanna nap. That has been happening quite a lot lately, with being pregnant and exhausted and then not pregnant and still exhausted. In fact, in many ways I feel like the past five months have passed in a blur of life being those moments of necessary activity which occur between the glorious escape which is sleep. Anyway, back to today’s nap.

I crawled into bed, or rather shuffled in sideways, carefully squeezing between the sheet and the quilt in order to avoid disturbing the dumped carefully arranged piles of clean washing, library books, various items of not-yet-put-away travel paraphernalia, collection of dolls, soft bears, wooden blocks, and random (toddler sized) shoe, which adorned the topside of our doona.

You see this morning we had visitors and in order for our home to be presentable enough to allow visitors anywhere near our humble chateau we first needed to have a bit of a tidy up. Except I have since been informed that what we actually had was a ‘hide-y up!’ Yes, that extreme form of de-cluttering which involves scooping up copious amounts of homey stuff and dumping it unceremoniously behind closed doors. In this case, the doors of both the spare bedroom and the master bedroom.

Of course, once I had managed to manipulate my weary limbs into a somewhat comfortable position, I could not actually sleep as I felt too guilty about lying down when there was clearly so much actual tidying up which needed to be done *sigh* Where would we be without mother guilt to keep us going???

Tell me I am not alone! Have you ever been known to engage in the odd ‘hide-y up’ before guests arrive?

I did, but now I'm a "take me (or my house) as I am (or as it is) kinda gal. Except if it is my mother in law. Then it is a full scale tidy-hidey.

almost every single time!! Sometimes if its a special occasion like Kezi's party I have done so much hiding of stuff in our room that I forget. I just finish tidying up from the party and head to our room only to discover the washing baskets (clean ones and dirty), books, various papers etc... Sigh.

    Ah mummy guilt.
That is the topic of my next book.
I've learnt so much about living without it I have to share with others :)
And yes, I've done the hidey-up thing too!

Absolutely! We often toss laundry and toys down the basement steps to "deal with later". The laundry gets washed, the toys clutter up the bottom of the steps. I've been known to run down stairs and slide all the toys just out of view and then put up the baby gate announcing, "Things aren't baby proofed down there so the basement is off limits today" when my friends arrive.

Image management is one of my struggles.

What a great name for it! We have to make the effort to invite people over fairly regularly which forces us to do 'Emergency Tidying' - which is a big effort, but we all benefit from it for days afterwards. It often results in a lot of 'tossing in the office' though.
My heart goes out to you with the loss of your bub. I've been there, and it's quite a journey... the grief and the physicality of it all.
I think you should forget the jobs for a little while. You deserve the nap.

Definitely! But sometimes, I don't get a chance to put things away after the visitors leave - so the piles in our room continue to grow!

I am no longer as discreet about it. I find a box, put everything in the box, then move the box to the corner. Everything looks neat, but isn't really put away, it's just not all over the floor anymore :)

I had to giggle as I read further and further down your post. It's me to a tee!! I am always scared someone will ask to go in there. I get all excited when I see the rest of the house. I become quite proud until I return to my bedroom and remember how the rest of the house got so tidy.

oh that is me too. I can echo what the others have said, also about forgetting that it's there until you go back into your room after everyone has left and reality hits... HARD. I want to change, but it feels like it's two steps forwards and 15 steps back. Probably if I was cleaning now instead of on the computer it might be different.

I hidey-up all the time! In fact, I invite people over purposely so that I have the motivation to clean the house. If it wasn't for regular visitors we would live in a tip! My husband thinks it's hilarious, but is very supportive because he's very social and loves company, whatever the motive.

Hidey-up! That's hilarious, and yes, I'm very guilty of that. Its normally the dining room table that gets the treatment, as its always covered in fabric and shirts and paper work. The problem is that I sometimes forget to go and get the pile from its hiding place...for a few days. Then I end up forgetting to do something I should have done. I also love inviting people over to motivate me to tidy up! Great post! :)

Most of our friends have never seen the inside of the master bedroom. Why? It's the only place I can throw things when I hidey-up in a hurry!

Absolutely! We're renovating at the moment so recently had to move our daughter into the spare room. So, first we had to empty out the spare room.... which we half did before holding Miss A's birthday party. In cleaning up before that, I threw everything into the spare room, so it was even worse than before. Sigh.

I'm so glad I read this post, and all of the comments. I feel justified in my sloppy ways!

Our master bedroom is usually a complete mess and is also used as the hidey-up room!

I throw everything into laundry baskets and then lock them into my bedroom. Usually they stay there until the laundry situation gets dire.

Um... my four year old son always asks me everytime I clean something, 'are we having visitors? Yay!'

So I will blush and say yes, I have been known for this behaviour! I do clean when we don't have visitors coming, but not in such a manic, panicked way.

Oh my yes...go to bed for the night and MAN, I left all those unfolded clothes in piles on the bed?? Oh well, crawl over them or put them in a new pile on the (storage) glider rocker until (hopefully) tomorrow. ((as in HOPEFULLY it'll be moved tomorrow...not likely though))
Glad I'm not the only one. :)
I'm a "one more thing" type of person and I can NEVER stop doing things because there is always, "ONE MORE THING" to do before going to bed, leaving the house, doing something for myself or whatever.

I do the same thing and even go so far as to lock the bedroom door so nobody accidentally goes in there!
This might bring you a laugh in light of your "confession."

Funny! I always hidey up and think I get the place looking pretty good but last time my mother visited she said "It's such a shame you don't have a cleaner"- ouch!
