Invitation to Create: Sticker Drawings

Invitation to Create Sticker Drawings | Childhood 101

An invitation to create is just what it sounds like – a simple collection of art making materials arranged in a thoughtful manner as an invitation for children to discover and create with. They take just moments to set up and encourage open ended exploration and art making.

To set up this invitation to create, I placed Immy’s sketch book open on the table with a few sheets of coloured dot stickers and some coloured pencils. I randomly stuck three of the dots on a page and that was it. Then I sat back to watch the magic happen.

Immy was immediately captivated and sat down to start drawing, adding stickers as she went,

creating a magical wonderland and an imaginative oral story to go along with it.

Or course, in our house, what big sister is doing so is little sister!

And there is so much to love about this little creation too 🙂

Do you set up invitations to create for your children? What materials have you inspired them with lately?

  1. This happens to be a great idea I’ve done similar things with non sticker like material. I’ve given a few circles, a triangle, 2 rectangles and have them paste them down and then finish the picture.

  2. We set up a similar invitation at preschool a couple of weeks back. Your girls might enjoy some prompts from the Ed Emberley ‘Picture Pie’ books. He makes pictures using round stickers cut in halves or quarters. Great fine motor work too 🙂

My own kids have loved playing with packing foam beads lately. They made the most amazing puppets with them.

  3. I love colored sticker dots for activities for children. They are cheap and can be used in so many different ways. I just did a blog post on a gross and fine motor activity that you can view here http://yourtherapysource.com/blog1/2014/03/13/gross-motor-and-fine-motor-activity-using-colored-dot-stickers/. Here is a video about a DIY colored block game for older children http://www.yourtherapysource.com/videocoloredblocks.html. I love to use them on index cards for children to copy the patterns. Also, instead of using dot markers you can use the stickers on certain pictures.
Agree with Nichole – those Picture Pie books are great! If you don’t have the stickers just cut out circles.

  4. I love the simplicity of this, Christie, and how it encourages children to make creative decisions. Off to share on my FB page later today!
