Being Mum: Simple Pleasures

Becoming a Mum changes things. Whatever your parenting style. Whatever your work status. Whatever your financial situation. Things change.

These changes are not necessarily negative, life is just different. And as a result of this difference, you often start to appreciate more of the simple pleasures in life.

Last week I tweeted on Twitter and posted on Facebook, the following;

A drive in the car without having to listen to the Wiggles. Simple pleasures! What are yours?

Yes, I know, it is sad. Being pleased to be driving in the car without having to listen to childrens music (let alone the same CD over and over and over again). Sad but true.

As were the responses I received,most of which made me smile (true, I mean, not sad);

We all need these moments every now and then.
As a parent, what are your simple pleasures?

    A night in which I get more than 4 hours in a row of uninterrupted sleep. I usually manage one about every 2 weeks, it is bliss and the energy levels the next day WOW! My girls are 5yo and 6yo so it has been a long time with sleep problems.

    When I put my daughter into childcare (I work from home so put her in once a week when I have work on), I come home and leave doors open and leave my things lying around. The feeling of being able to do that without worrying what a curious toddler is getting into is quite strange!

    Listening to music. I rarely listen to music anymore that isn't kids music...usually as soon as I try to put some on Little Man will start requesting "his" songs. The occasional time when I get some time in the house to myself - and actually remember to put some music on - I realize how much I miss it!

    I went and had breakfast on my own at a cafe on Sunday. Pure bliss and I could even read the paper and drink HOT coffee

    This put a smile on my face :-) I think most mums will all be nodding in agreement as they read through the list.

    The other day I had to wait at a service desk at Kmart and I had no kids with me at the time. Instead of wanting the guy to hurry up I realised that I actually enjoyed just standing there, waiting without anyone pulling at me or wanting me to hurry up. Now, that is a simple pleasure.

    A couple of nights ago after having spent a busy day with my 3 year old gril and my 9 1/2 months baby boy my husband and I wrote on the facebook status: "I need 5 minutes of grown up conversation!"

    As much as we love our kids some times it's REALLY hard for us to have a conversation, say at the dinner table, without our kids interrupting us beacuse something we've just said triggered a reminder of something they lived at school.

    As personal treats for mummy (that's ME!) once a month I go to the hairdresser's and have my hair cut and done, manicure and pedicure and the painful waxing of legs armpits and bikini.

    Going to the hairdresser's for a couple of hours of pampering, a magazine and jazz music!
