I think chocolate playdough might be my all time pick of the best homemade playdough. It smells amazing but it tastes like playdough so the kids won’t eat it….. well mostly!!! This simple no cook chocolate playdough recipe is perfect for play, in fact it inspired an imaginary ice cream shop in our home!

No Cook Chocolate Playdough Recipe

The secret to chocolate playdough is cocoa! You’ll also need regular ingredients for homemade playdough – flour, salt, oil and cream of tarter. The recipe below is an adaptation of the simplest never-fail playdough recipe that I have used for years as both a parent and a teacher.

Pretend Ice Cream Shop for Imaginary Play

Once your fresh batch of chocolate playdough is ready, it’s time to set up your pretend ice cream shop.

I placed the playdough into a plastic container and added an ice cream scoop.

Then I add some small, pretty paper cups to serve the ‘ice cream’ playdough in (these can be found in the party/baking supplies aisle of our local supermarket). I also added some small spoons and sequins to represent sprinkles to add to the ‘ice cream’.

No Cook Chocolate Playdough Recipe

Chocolate no cook playdough recipe

A simple no cook chocolate playdough recipe to inspire sensory play.

Materials

  • 1 1/2 cups of plain flour
  • 1/2 cup of cocoa
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 2 Tablespoons of cream of tartar
  • 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 1/3 cups of boiling water

Tools

  • Large bowl
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Wooden spoon

Instructions

    1. Combine all of the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
    2. Add the oil and then slowly mix in the boiling water.
    3. Place the combined ingredients onto the bench top and knead until the dough is beautiful and smooth. If the playdough feels sticky, knead in a little extra flour.

Notes

  • Homemade playdough is best stored wrapped securely in an airtight plastic bag in a cool, dry place.
