Hello! I’m Kylie, a mother to two year old ‘Pebble’, wife and early childhood educator who loves playing and cooking, and using as many geek-tech tools as possible along the way. My blog, Octavia and Vicky, is named after a story I wrote when I was five years old. It is about a spider named Octavia and her young friend, Vicky. Thank you so much to Christie for inviting me to guest post at Childhood 101, it is a real treat.
As a teacher and book lover it has been very important to me to include reading, books and stories from the very start of Pebble’s life. My husband and I both read books to her through my belly when I was pregnant, we had lots of soft fabric books for her to ‘read’ (and chew!) when she was a tiny baby, and we have always included books as a part of our day.

We find any excuse to include books and stories in our routines:
- reading together and borrowing books at the library
- enjoying stories before bed
- sharing told stories (Pebble calls them ‘mouth’ stories)
- playing stories apps on our phones
- making home made books
- reading in a cubby
- sitting outside and reading under our lemon tree
- reading and singing nursery rhymes
- listening to story CDs in the car
- reading in bed together
- reading in the car
- taking books in every bag for every outing
- acting out and retelling favourite stories
Reading with her cousin, seven months
Sharing a book with Daddy, nine months old
Enjoying a comfy spot with a book, ten months old
Sharing a story is one of the very favourite parts of both our days (except, perhaps, when she wants “just one more” and Mummy wants her to GO TO SLEEP!). I can’t imagine a life without books and the richness that they give our every day lives.

Enjoying an old favourite, two years old
For Pebble’s first birthday we bought her a complete set of Enid Blyton’s Magic Faraway Tree series. I am so looking forward to continuing this shared love of reading with these very special childhood favourites of my own.
How do you enjoy books with your children?
A big thank you to Kylie for sharing her daughter’s journey with us. I loved the pictorial timeline of Pebble’s reading journey so far. Be sure to visit Octavia and Vicky for great ideas for playtime and family time.
