The team at fun literary website, Bug in a Book, have put together a list of suggested books around the theme of ‘Dads,’ just in time for the Australian Father’s Day this Sunday (but really we know they are great reads for anytime!)
My childhood male role model would have to be my Dad! If you met my Dad, you would see where my wacky sense of humour comes from! He was really bad for making lame jokes when we were in a crowded supermarket, or even worse…at school!!! This one time, he took us to school in his little dune buggy, with no shirt on!! Oh it was so embarrassing! He sure was a daggy Dad! In saying this, I feel particularly attracted to Katrina Germein’s new book called “My dad thinks he’s funny”, illustrated by Tom Jellett.
This book is about a dad who always manages to come up with “funny” jokes for almost all occasions.
My dad doesn’t like babysitting.
He says no one should sit on babies.
My dad doesn’t eat seafood.
He says there’s something fishy about it.
My dad doesn’t lie in bed.
He says you should always tell the truth.
My dad thinks he’s funny.
Do you know someone like this in your family??
Another great read, is Libby Gleeson’s book,” Uncle David”, illustrated by Armin Greder.
This story is about a young boy called Ned. When Ned (the smallest kid in his class) claims that his uncle is a giant, his friends eagerly spread the news. And the more the stories are repeated, the more they grow. But once everyone meets Uncle David, they happily discover that he’s not too big and famous to visit their school for a giant afternoon of show-and-tell! This book is a delightful reminder of just how the world is seen through the eyes of a small child, where EVERYTHING appears gigantic!
A fantastic book, which I’m sure most parents can relate to, is a beautiful story called “My Dad is GREAT!” written by Gaby Goldsack and illustrated by Sara Walker.
My Dad is great! He is very patient with me, and lets me wear whatever I want to wear! He’s a brilliant runner, and we both love hotdogs! He’s also the best handy man. Even though all dads are special, my dad is grrrreat!!
This story will be a favourite for kids (and dads) everywhere!
If you can’t go past a “lift the flap” book, then you have to check out this terrific little book, My Grandad, by Jeanette Rowe. This is a story about just how fantastic granddads can be!
My grandad….tells me stories. My grandad….helps me ride my bike. My grandad…helps me make things, and much more!
A beautiful little book, to show how much a grandchild appreciates their grandad and just how special they really are!
