Our Play Space: Christmas Card Making Station

CHRISTMAS-CARD-MAKING-WITH-KIDS-5

Our art making space has been transformed into a hub for creativity and early literacy development – a Christmas Card Making Station!

IDEAS FOR CHRISTMAS CARD MAKING WITH KIDS

It was simple to assemble. I started by hanging our 12 Days of Christmas garland for a touch of festive cheer and added two word prompt cards to engage Immy with having a go at writing in her homemade cards – the first hosts the words ‘To’ and ‘From’ and on the second the words ‘Merry Christmas.’

CHRISTMAS CARD MAKING WITH KIDS

I gathered together a collection of card making supplies, including;

  • Pre-folded, blank cardstock cards
  • Christmas stickers
  • Sheets of Christmas scrapbooking paper
  • Pre-cut, metallic Christmas shapes
  • Christmas stamps and stamp pad

And added felt tipped markers, pens, a glue stick and decorative scissors. The markers, scissors and blank cards are all displayed in recycled containers (from cream of tartar and butter) that I wrapped in strips of scrapbooking paper.

Finally, I scanned Immy’s kindy class photo and made name cards with a head shot of each of the children in her class as an aid for having a go at writing their names (as you can see, I have obscured the head shots here to preserve the children’s privacy).

Christmas is such a wonderful time for promoting both creativity and literacy in authentic, naturally occurring ways.

  1. that makes me want to sit down and make some!

we have a similar station at our house, but its for making paper chains. All similar crafty stuff except strips of paper instead of cards. The kids come and go from it all the time (its a great ‘time filler’) and every few days we add the newly made links to the ever growing chain…the kids love watching it extend around the house. When theres a bit more time on our hands we get the paint out and do fingerprints and patterns etc.

am def going to use scrapbook paper to cover a few containers … it looks great

    1. Oooh, I love the paper chain idea. I think our space could easily transform purposes sometime during the next two weeks:)

  2. I love it Christie! So warm, inviting and full of opportunities for writing and giving!

  3. Love this idea! Can’t wait to set up a station for my boys!

  4. Great idea. I was planning to get my daughter to whip up all our Christmas cards anyway but this approach would make it more attractive to her. Please can you tell me – where did you get your Christmas stamps/what brand are they?

    1. I am not sure where you are based but these were from Spotlight and the brand is Sugar & Spice Studio 🙂

      1. Thank you!

  5. I love it, Christie! I might have to steal your idea for Bella 🙂

  6. Gorgeous! I absolute love this and think that it’s a wonderfully thought out and put together invitation to create and learn. These are our favourite types of activities. My Maddie would jump right into this one and I think when we do the rest of our home made cards, I will definitely have to set it out equally as invitingly.

  7. Thank you Christie, we have something similar set up and my daughter is loving it but I have been chasing christmas stamps and can’t seem to track them down. Can you please let me know where you got yours from. Thank you! Love your blog for my gorgeous creative little girl 🙂
