The Simple Things: How Toddlers Learn About the World

Toddler learning

It finally rained! We have been waiting for rain for quite some time. I can’t remember it raining for about 4 months now – which is a long time in the life of a little person.

So this past week it finally rained and Immy loved it. She is just the right height to peek out of our lounge room window and she stood at the window and stared out at the rain, fascinated and excited as her world changed yet again. I wonder what she thinks of this bizarre phenomenon that turns her world all grey and cold and wet, of the noise on the roof as she lays in bed, of rushing through puddles in gumboots with a brolly to get to the car without getting wet?

“Children learn by striving to make sense of what is around them, making connections between what is known and what is unknown, continually processing new information and making new links, exploring new possibilities, being open to changing ideas.”

– From the Reggio Emilia Australia Information Exchange
Landscapes of Possibility Conference 2007
