We Play: It’s Learning Wrapped Up As Fun

With Dad 101 on holidays for the past two weeks, we decided to have a major clean up/sort through/throw out around our home.  Immy has spent the time when we are busy either helping out or playing close by.  In the course of my sorting and culling, I came across some sheets of stickers from my scrapbooking days (I haven’t scrapbooked for probably about eight years now).  So when Immy next needed some playful intervention I pulled the stickers out and suggested we make a picture of a city.

I quickly drew a road on a large sheet of paper and then added various details as Immy and I discussed what we could include in the space – a park, some city buildings, homes, shopping centre and beach.  I gave Immy the vehicle stickers to begin with and then added the various other stickers over the course of the morning – little sets of flowers, insects, boats, camping goods, animals and people.  She played with this scene, coming back to add to it, on and off all day long.  In fact, I took the photo before it was complete and as I look at it now, there was actually a whole lot more added before it was declared ready to be hung up.  And then she came back the following day to keep working on it, adding more sticker of her own :)

Thank you to everyone who played along with us last week.  I chose my favourite post as I love how all of the ideas contain within it are actually very simple but when they are all wrapped up together into a playful afternoon, it just looks like so much fun.

What learning wrapped up as fun has been happening in your playspace this week?

  1. First, let me say I’m glad to find someone else who does not scrapbook! Since the children keep a journal, thankfully there is really no need for me to scrapbook. Their journals are full of toddler scribbles and memories from daily life. This week I happen to be sharing some dinosaur journal entries from my son. He loves dinosaurs! It’s great to see his learning through the years.

Second, that map is great. What fantastic interaction. Just love when children get to take the lead! This would work great at home or the classroom.

  2. Love your map…love your spur of the moment fun and love that you also find it hard to scrapbook! I have two scrapbook kits waiting to be put together for my boys but I never seem to make the time or find the time to make them…however you look at it…
Thanks for your neat idea of making maps and using up supplies you have in your home.
    Have a happy week,
    Colleen
P.S. hope that you will pop by my blog soon, as I have lots of giveaways coming up over the next few weeks that you might like for Immy. The majority of the giveaways are open worldwide too.
    :)

  3. This map is so cute, and what a good memory that is better than scrapbooking album :)

  4. Stickers are just the best thing ever ! (bought some for myself today..)
We had such a great time with a friend and her little daughter at a playground, that I decided to link up, even if it’s not about a particular toy or game, but more about the fact that he is so good at playing.. with little ones. :)

  5. Oh I love your map, especially the parking lot – looks like my driving technique! :-D What a great activity to do together, you could just keep adding and adding to it. Im so glad you liked our rainbow playdate last week, thankyou for linking up!

  6. We too have been busy cleaning and decluttering the past week – it’s fun finding things long forgotten about, and finding a better use for them! This is a great example of it :) Loving the new look of your blog too.

  7. Spur of the moment, from what we have activities are often the best, Love yours~

  8. Cleaning with your child is like play. They love to copy us and want us to show them how to do it.
My son loves to help with all the house work and it makes it fun for me too.
