Homemade Gifts for Kids: Sewing Kit
Here is a simple gift idea for preschoolers or bigger kids who enjoy the challenge of beginner sewing activities.
Beginner Sewing Kit
You will need:
- A small toolbox, tackle box or sewing basket – I picked up this plastic toolbox for just $3
- Embroidery thread
- Blunt tipped wool or tapestry needles or bodkins
- Needle threader
- Scissors
- Permanent markers or fabric markers
- Embroidery hoop
- Pincushion
- Measuring tape
- Hessian
- Felt
- Cross stitch Aida fabric
- Plastic canvas
- Sequins
- Beads
- Buttons
- Small, sectioned plastic container for storing notions and needles
- Ribbon
- Optional – stickers to bling your box!
To assemble:
Cut all fabric pieces to size.
Sort notions and needles into a sectioned storage container.
Cut plastic canvas into shapes and/or add simple line drawings as outlines for children to sew around or decorate with sequins.
Arrange all items into the box and tray as desired.
Close, wrap and place under Christmas tree ready for some holiday stitching fun!

This is such a wonderful idea. I’m making most of gifts this year and this will be perfect for some of our cousins. Pinning.
I love all those buttons and sequins. I have a niece that would love this!
I love this! I kind of want one now. I got a sewing machine a few years ago and was able to use it until the bobbin ran out of thread and then I was stuck until my mom came out to visit and fixed it for me. I am always so jealous of my crafty friends who know how to sew! Thanks for sharing.
I love this Christie! I am making more hand/homemade gifts this year, and this is perfect.
What a beautiful gift idea! When I saw the title I thought Miss Poss would be too young for it but no, she’s not. She would love this! I’ve just gotten in to sewing too, so she would be quite keen to have a go too.
Wow this post brought back memories from my childhood when I too received a hand made sewing basket with similar items to this for Christmas.
I am loving these gift ideas, I have been pinning them all and will be putting them to good use.
Sewing kits always go down well around here.
The ‘bling’ and canvas additions are a great, practical idea!
This is a great idea. I wouldn’t have thought of it for my four year old!
my daughter hounds me to sew, this would be perfect for her.
My girls would absolutely love this and it is such a great gift idea.
I am making one of these for each of my girls this year! I think they will be thrilled! Thanks so much for the inspiration! 🙂

I would have loved that as a child, I think I might need to pin this post and make one for miss 2.5’s next birthday!
A lovely idea Christie…my teen still has her little kit and pulls out a project every now and then!
I have two nieces who would love these. They’re 9 and 7 but you could easily make it for older kids. This year I made them a letter writing box which I hope they like. Hoping to get lots of letters in the mail from them 🙂
Oh my! This brought back some memories! I got my first sewing box when I was 9 and I LOVED it! I still have the actual box and a couple of ribbons/bows from the original kit my mum made me. What a special collection! 🙂
When I make a new pincushion, I put a steel wool pad in the top, under the fabric so when pins are stuck into it, they are sharpened. It works really well and who doesn’t like sharp pins and needles?
This is exactly what I was looking for to put together for my niece for Christmas. Do you recommend any beginner sewing books too? Thanks so much!
