5 Simple Lunch Box Ideas: Make Your Child’s School Lunch More Memorable

I love to do things to surprise Immy when she opens her lunch box at school. Not big, time consuming things but little tokens of love that I hope will bring a smile to her face and remind her that I am thinking of her. Here are 5 simple techniques I use to make her lunch just a little more memorable…

1. Biscuit or cookie cutters are my best friend when it comes to these little surprises. I use them to cut shapes from slices of cheese or fruit. Slices of watermelon, honeydew melon, rockmelon (cantaloupe) and cucumber work particularly well.

2. As another alternative to sandwiches (see the original list here – Lunch Box Ideas for Kids Who Don’t Like Sandwiches), Immy enjoys French toast (eggy bread) characters. They take only a few minutes to make and when packed with an ice brick in her lunch bag, are still good to eat at lunch time.

3. Again my trusty biscuit cutters are put to work, this time to make a peekaboo sandwich. Sandwich cutters and punches can also add a little more interest to the humble sandwich.

4. When I saw the food safe markers recently over at Small Potatoes, I was green with envy. I haven’t invested in a set yet but came up with my own alternative – ‘writing’ or stamping a message with a small paintbrush and biscuit cutters, and food colouring. A little more time consuming, this one might be best kept for birthdays or other special occasions.

5. Finally, add a message of love or support for your child via a lunch box note. Picklebums features gorgeous printable notes here and here (as well as great suggestions on what to write on them).

Do you have a favourite way to add a little token of love to your children’s lunch boxes?
