Our Play Space: Montessori Inspired Play & Learning Space

I became extremely interested in Montessori about a year ago. At the time and over the last year we spent a good amount of time applying a Montessori overlay to our home. We also spent a lot of educating ourselves on the philosophy with the hope of homeschooling our boys (3 years and 1 year old).

I was extremely frustrated with trying to fit a Montessori space into our already established home. I desperately wanted a fresh start. Well, I got the opportunity when we moved just over a week ago.

To us it means simplifying the space (e.g. rotating materials in and out), creating a space in which the boys can access whatever they need to work and play, including shelves with sensory exploration (e.g. discovery bottles), language and writing (e.g. first words puzzles, alphabet blocks, tons of books and a writing center), culture (e.g. a world map), basic reasoning and logic (e.g. building blocks and matching/sorting materials) and pretend play (e.g. kitchen and puppets in their reading corner). There is also a music basket and nature brought into the room via a basket and plant.

We still have a lot of work to do refining the area but we’re happy with the results so far.

Thank you Marnie of Carrots Are Orange for sharing your play space with us, I hope you are enjoying your new home 🙂  You can read more about this playful learning space here.

  1. A lovely space! As a homeschooling family, I try to incorporate these same things into our spaces too.
    Thanks for sharing!

  2. Hi there! Thanks so much for featuring our “work in progress”! Since this post we’ve been able to incorporate additional book shelving systems and art work on the walls. We also added a gorgeous us map to track our virtual road trip this summer! Thanks so much for allowing us to share this journey with your readers!

  3. What a wonderful space for the little ones. I love simplified spaces for play…it’s something I have been striving to obtain for a while. I can’t wait to see your additions!

I love how simple this space is. I’m sure the kids will have a lot of fun playing and learning there.
