Simple Party Invitation Idea

When it comes to birthday parties, simple is good – especially for those of us who get carried away thanks to the likes of Pinterest! I first came across this simple photo idea for party invitations when it was used by a good friend of mine for her daughter’s 5th birthday party. She has used it many times for different parties and celebrations and I thought it was too good not too share!

Party Invitation Ideas

To create your very own photo invitation, you will need an art diary with black pages or piece of thick, black art board, a stick of chalk, a camera and a willing accomplice (best to choose a time when they are fresh and happy to be in front of the camera). Write a simple message of invitation on a page of your art diary or art board and then take a series of photos of your child holding the announcement. Try a few locations in and around your home so that you have a good variety to choose from.

Birthday Invitation Ideas

As you choose possible locations for your photos, consider what your child likes to do and where they like to play, and the theme of your party. Cute ideas  include;

  • Jumping on the trampoline
  • Hanging their ‘sign’ out a cubby house/playhouse window
  • Sitting at the top of a slide, with their message board rested on their lap
  • Add simple props like colourful balloons to create a fabulous backdrop for your photo
  • Surrounding your child with heaps of colourful, soft toys (fill the frame) for a fun backdrop
  • Representing your party theme by adding toys as props and dressing your child in costume for the photo

When it comes to adding the additional party invitation details, you have a few options;

  • For those who are more technologically confident, use a photo editing program like Photoshop or the free online program PicMonkey to add text directly to the photo before printing.
  • For those less technology confident but still with computer access, type up your party details, print them onto lightweight cardstock and attach to the back of your printed photo with thin, double sided tape.
  • For a really low tech option, write your details directly on the back of each printed photo with a permanent marker pen.

 Party Invitation and Thank You Ideas

Other adaptations for this photo invitation idea include;

  • Pop a Santa hat on your toddler or preschooler and change your message to ‘Merry Christmas’ for a fabulous Christmas party invitation or personalised Christmas card.
  • Give your child a golden party hat and party whistle or horn to create a fabulously unique New Years party invitation
  • Swap out the message to read ‘Big Sister’ or ‘Big Brother’ on your board for a pregnancy announcement.
  • Write ‘He/She’s Here!’ on your board and place alongside a new baby for your birth announcement. You can add relevant details like birthdate, time, length and weight too.
  •  Change your message to ‘Thank You’ for a fabulous post-party Thank You card.
