Learning about holidays around the world is a fabulous way for students to learn about the ways in which other countries and cultures are different, and similar, to their own. Chinese New Year is a very popular holiday, celebrated in many Asian countries, which makes it an important inclusion in our Celebrations Around the World Calendar 2024 (which includes 150 ideas for world holidays to celebrate in your classroom or homeschool setting).
Why learn about Chinese New Year?
Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival and the date that the holiday commences changes each year as it is based on the Lunar calendar. It is a popular celebration across Asian communities all around the world, including Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
Each year on the Chinese calendar is represented by one of twelve zodiac animals. In order they are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. 2022 was the Year of the Tiger, 2023 the Year of the Rabbit and 2024 the Year of the Dragon.
There are lots of interesting facts and traditions to engage children in learning about this celebration, which makes it a great addition to any study of holidays around the world.
