100 Days of School Books

Will you be celebrating the 100th day of school with your students this year? Reading a title from this list of 100 Days of School books is a great way to combine literacy with the mathematical process of counting the first 100 days.

There are books included on this list that will work for preschool, kindergarten and the early elementary/primary grades. Many of the stories share how the characters celebrate the 100th day of school as an occasion, which is a great way to prepare children for the day and also plan ways in which your own class or group might celebrate together.

I’ve also included a few books about a hundred, such as If I Were 100 Years Old and If the World Were 100 People, that are perfect for reading with children on your 100th day.

Miss Mingo and the 100th Day of School by Jamie Harper Mis Mingo (the pink flamingo) and her joyful class of student animals share ways in which they count to, or calculate to reach, the number 100 as they celebrate the 100th day of school with some special projects and activities. The 100 Hats of the Cat in the Hat: A Celebration of the 100th Day of School by Tish Rabe On the 100th day of school the Cat in the Hat visits Sally and Dick’s classroom to share some simple tools for counting 100, including a hundreds chart, tens frame and number line. Available: Amazon

If I Were 100 Years Old by Mary Jantz Imagine knowing someone who has lived to be one hundred years old. How many changes have they witnessed in the world in 100 years’ time? A beautiful book of respect and appreciation for older members of our community, perfect for reflection on the 100th day of school. Available: Amazon

100 Days of Kindness by Cindy Jin Whilst this is a wonderful idea for a book to share with students as you are counting those first 100 days of school, I think this collection of simple kindness ideas works just as well as inspiration towards spending the next 100 days focused on acts of kindness. If the World Were 100 People: A Visual Guide to Our Global Village by Jackie McCann Use the 100th day of school to inspire elementary age students to think about the social world we live in with this clever concept book. With almost 7.8 billion people sharing the earth, it can be a little hard to picture what the human race looks like.
