Kids Art: The Lure of ‘Don’t Touch’

On the weekend, after a suspiciously quiet period of time, I discovered Immy had found a permanent marker pen in my study and decided to get busy decorating with it. Luckily, none of my newly graffiti-ed items were of value and we eventually managed to wash it off her own skin!

Immy is always fascinated with my pens (even though she has her own washable marker pens) and she has been told not to touch them (though when has that ever stopped a toddler!) and I generally keep them out of reach, in fact I thought this one was out of reach but it appears my study needs some re-organisation now she is a little older 🙂 , so today I decided that some supervised use with very clear guidelines about when, where and how she uses them might reduce the likelihood of a repeat offense of the graffiti-ing nature!
Immy got drawing, telling me she was going to draw a butterfly and pointing out the long nose and many legs when she was done. I then suggested she could add some colour to her butterfly and we got out my favourite toddler watercolours, food colouring, and some cotton buds for her to complete her masterpiece. I love the finished piece (it is definitely a keeper) and I am hoping that my master plan to keep her away from my pens (at least without permission) will be successful. I’ll keep you posted!

In the meantime, what have your children been creating this week?

  1. I used to give my girls whiteboard markers and let them draw on the fridge and freezer. They would have so much fun and when they were done there was more fun to be had cleaning off the fridge and freezer.

  2. Beautiful drawing!

I know what you mean – my toddler managed to combine a book that was on loan to us from our neighbour (which had been kept out of her reach unless we were reading it together), a pen (all pens, textas and crayons are usually kept out of her reach unless I'm supervising her) and five minutes when I was sidetracked dealing with the washing machine repairman… *sigh*

  3. My kids LOVE my pens, but they have gotten really good about using them only at their table, on paper. Immy's masterpiece is lovely =)

I love that she's drawing outside! I will have to drag our easel out.

My children have been using a black line to create pen & ink drawings and beautiful water color paintings. The combination of black line and water color is very effective.

Looks like we've been on the same creative wave length. 🙂 At least our children have been. We've been water painting and using natural items and play-doh too.
