18 Super Sandwich Fillings Kids Will Love
Isn’t it funny how certain foods evoke strong memories?
I have childhood memories of small, oval shaped Counter biscuits with squares of cheese, sweet jam on a spoon to cover the taste of crushed up medication that I hated to take, ham steaks served with rings of tinned pineapple, and my Dad’s tuna casserole recipe which now works its magic on a second generation of family members as it’s Immy’s first choice for dinner whenever she goes to stay with my parents.
Sometimes it is not even a memory, more a feeling or emotion – comfort, joy, security, love.
I had one such emotional flash today as I thought about introducing my somewhat sandwich-adverse five year old to some new sandwich fillings – bought about by some apple with cinnamon sugar.
So as I am pondering food memories and wondering which foods my children will most remember, here are some sandwich filling ideas you might like to try for lunch with your children sometime soon…
- Avocado and cream cheese
- Sliced cucumber topped with tuna mixed with mayo
- Mashed egg with lettuce
- Homemade sun butter with strawberry jam
- Sliced apple sprinkled with cinnamon sugar
- Tomato, tinned beetroot and cheese
- Mashed banana
- Tinned creamed corn
- Ricotta, grated carrot and sultanas
- Vegemite and cheese
- Peanut butter with sliced banana or strawberries
- Leftover roasted meat with a smear of apple sauce
- Cream cheese, tinned tuna and baby spinach leaves
- Cream cheese with sliced strawberries
- Ham (or bacon), mashed egg and cheese
- Avocado, carrot and cucumber sticks rolled up in the slice of bread, like sushi
- Tinned spaghetti or baked beans with cheese
- Finely sliced apple and mayo sprinkled with crushed walnuts
Some of these are even yummier toasted!

Which foods do you associate with childhood memories? Which do you think your children will most remember?
Love banana sandwiches, especially toasted & nothing beats egg & lettuce. Never would of thought of apple on a sandwich though!
Thanks for sharing these! Being Asian, I find that it’s hard to create interesting sandwiches for my daughter’s lunch box, as we are so used to rice and noodles at home.
My childhood food memories are surrounded by smells of my mom’s homemade tomato sauce and meatballs atop a pile of macaroni (we didn’t call it pasta back then:)! We had it fresh on Sundays and leftover on Wednesdays – and it was ALWAYS best on Wednesday! My children, who are all grown up now, were raised on it as well. And my hubby (who is Irish and German) makes it all of the time! The tradition and memories live on!
Great list! What is tinned though?
Canned 🙂
My childhood memory sandwich is plain white bread with a dollop of butter and sprinkle of sugar. Chocolate sprinkles too if we were good that week. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your ideas. I might start making them for my little girl and hope that she will pass it on to hers. 🙂
Thank you so much for giving several ideas of making beautiful sandwiches.
My favourite, and one my son now loves too, was grated carrot and grated cheese mixed together.
Yum!
Hi! Thanks for these, please can you give me your Dads tuna casserole recipe too?
Thanks! Lisa
These are great! I will share it on our social media!
Thanks,
