Sewing Projects for Kids: Lavender-Scented Softies

Sewing with Kids: Handmade Lavender-Scented Softies

Did you ever make a doll when you were little? I sure did, although I think my first one might have been a monster. Either way, making a special little someone is so much fun.

Depending on your child’s fine motor skills, children can begin to learn to sew from about 2 1/2 – 3 years of age. Your child’s first foray into sewing might be simply moving the needle through fabric in an embroidery hoop. From there your little one might like to try stitching on some embellishments like buttons or sequins. Once they have got the hang of stitching, you can start to make little toys like these perfectly imperfect, one of a kind lavender-scented softies.

How to Make a Lavender-Scented Softie

You will need:

  • Plain fabric
  • Fabric marker pens
  • Fabric scissors
  • Embroidery thread
  • Embroidery needle – you can get plastic embroidery needles although I find my children become frustrated with trying to push these through the fabric. With supervision and a gentle reminder to keep little fingers out of the way, we find proper embroidery needles to be much more satisfying.
  • Stuffing
  • Dried lavender

Making the Softie

  1. Design your softie first in a sketchbook or on a blank sheet of paper.
  2. Secure two squares of fabric tightly in the embroidery hoop and draw a picture of your softie with the fabric markers onto the uppermost piece of fabric.
  3. With the fabric still in the embroidery hoop, thread the embroidery needle and stitch around your softie leaving a hole for stuffing.
  4. Using the fabric scissors, carefully trim the fabric around the outside of your embroidery hoop.
  5. Remove the hoop and tidy up any edges with the scissors.
  6. Take a small handful of lavender and place it inside some stuffing.
  7. Stuff your softie.
  8. Sew up the hole and your softie is done!
