Family Dinner Recipes: Wheat Free Chicken Patties

These chicken patties are a hit with everyone in our family, even with the fussier five year old – albeit with a dash of tomato sauce! At 20 months AJ gobbles them up and both Dad 101 and I both go back for seconds 😉 They are quick and easy to make, and wheat and dairy free – the secret being oats in the place of the more traditional breadcrumbs in similar recipes, and the combination of herbs and spices is delicious.

Oaty Chicken Patties Recipe

You will need:

  • 500gms chicken breast
  • 1 medium zucchini
  • 1 onion
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon tumeric
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • Oil for shallow frying

To make:

1. Chop zucchini and onion in food processor then remove.

2. Add chicken breast to food processor and mince.
3. Return zucchini and onion to processor, add egg and herbs and spices, process until combined.
4. Remove mixture from processor into a mixing bowl. Add oats and mix well. The mixture will still be quite wet.

5. Heat oil in a frypan over medium heat. Spoon mixture into pan, flatten with the back of the spoon. Once brown (3-4 minutes) flip and cook for a further 3-4 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towel.

Thanks for this tasty sounding recipe. I have been trying to go wheat-free and these look like something we all would like! I would love if you would stop by and share this on my weekly recipe linky, Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen, http://totsandme.blogspot.com/2014/01/kids-and-mom-in-kitchen-67-white-cake.html Have a great day!

Ohh these look good - am planning to try them out on our 2 1/2 year old who mostly refuses the dinners we offer.

I have a question referring to the Chicken is that raw when you put it in the food processor? Thanks

Hi Kate, yes, raw chicken breast :)

Have you tried baking these instead of frying them?

No I haven't, Michelle, but I imagine that would work

This is a great recipe for oldies too Christie. Pop and I are going to try it when the weather is cooler. Oats are so good for everyone. We may give it a go with red mince as well as I imagine the herbs would give it a great flavour. Thanks.

Might give them a try. Do they taste spicy at all? One of mine has a low tolerance for spice! And you mention herbs but there aren't any in the ingredients, did you use any? Thanks for all your great recipes :)

I don't think they are too spicy (either hot spicy or overly taste spicy - if that makes sense), Jane. I counted the coriander as a herb :)

Yum. These look like something my kids love but unfortunately we can't have oats, have a coeliac. Use polenta or rice crumbs instead though and no complaints :-)

Have you tried freezing the cooked patties? I'm wondering if they would be a good lunch box option? Thanks

I haven't tried freezing them yet, Dee, but we ate them cold on a picnic this week and they were delicious. I imagine they would be fine to freeze.

My family had these for dinner. Hubs and I had patty melts and the girls (18 months od) had finger foods and ate the patties on their own. Pretty good, mild, and will make again but wont mince it up as fine as we did...more texture might make it a better fit for my family. as an aside, we only had steel cut oats around so we used corn flakes =)

Love the idea of using corn flakes, Gillian. Unfortunately AJ can't eat corn but I can imagine it would work well as a substitute for the oats.
