Halloween Movement Brain Breaks for Preschool & Kindergarten

Glide like a shadow…bubble like a cauldron…rattle like a skeleton! This fun set of Halloween movement brain breaks cards includes 24 Halloween inspired actions that are super fun for younger students.

Brain breaks are a great way for students to release excess energy, ease physical tension or stress or refresh and re-focus during a lesson. They provide students with a short, mental break (usually 2-4 minutes) with the objective of refreshing students as they are learning.

Movement brain breaks, like these Halloween brain break cards, are especially good for young learners, who need lots of opportunity to move and stretch!

3 Ways to Use the Halloween Brain Breaks Cards

1. Move like…: The first and most straightforward use of the cards is simply allowing a student to select a card at random, with the students performing the chosen movement to move across the classroom or from one designated point in the room to another. This can be repeated a number of times with a new card selected each time.

2. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1: Choose a card at random for the children to perform 5 times e.g. ‘Take 5 trudging steps like a zombie,’ pause to allow time for students to perform the action, then the next card’s action they perform 4 times e.g. ‘Hiss like a cat 4 times,’ then repeat for 3, 2 and 1.

3. Acting Out!: Invite students to draw on their acting skills as you look for the most authentic performance of each action.

End the brain break activity with three, big, deep calming breaths.
