Halloween Pumpkins Matching Cards Game

Inside: Download our free Halloween Pumpkins Matching Cards Game for developing visual discrimination skills.

What makes a memory matching game such a great game for kids? It has simple rules, is easy to play, requires just a set of matching game cards, and is great for developing visual discrimination skills…. especially when played with printable Halloween pumpkin memory matching cards!

Why Halloween pumpkins? Because, apart from being fun and a teensy bit spooky, they make this matching game trickier than many of the others in our matching games collection. Players need to look for subtle differences to find those matching pairs!

Why is Visual Discrimination Important?

Visual discrimination is the ability to see differences and similarities, even subtle ones, between physical objects and images on printed materials. These likenesses and differences may be in size, shape, form, colour or position. Being able to recognise these differences helps children as they learn to read, write, spell, and develop in all areas of mathematics.

Games That Support the Development of Visual Discrimination

There are many great games that help develop visual discrimination ability, including jigsaw puzzles, dominoes, bingo games, mazes (including our printable alphabet mazes), sorting games and visual matching games.

How to Play the Halloween Pumpkins Memory Matching Game

Prepare a set of Halloween Pumpkins Cards (download link and printing instructions can be found at the bottom of this post).

Shuffle the cards well and spread them face down across the table.

Players take turns to turn over two cards, searching for the matching pairs of pumpkins. If the cards selected are a match, the player keeps the matching pair and takes another turn. If they are not the same, the cards are turned back over in the same location and play moves to the next player.

Once all cards have been matched, the player with the most pairs wins the game.
