Cooking with Kids: The Easy Version

There is nothing better when it comes to cooking with children than an easy, no-cook recipe. And there are few recipes that a simpler than making…
GUACAMOLE!

Immy loves avocado and we pretty much always have avocado in the house so when she was playing at making guacamole for her doll this morning, I suggested we make some for morning tea. She mashed up some avocado with a fork, added a good squeeze of lemon and then spread it onto water crackers. Easy 🙂

Dips are such an easy way to involve young children in preparing food. Some other easy dipping suggestions;

  • Mash cream cheese and stir in dry French Onion Soup Mix to taste.
  • Mix natural yoghurt, cucumber (grated or finely diced) and a good squeeze of lemon for a child friendly tzatziki
  • Mash some banana or squeeze an orange and stir into natural yoghurt for a sweet but healthy dipping option. Enjoy dipping with seasonal fruits.
  • Older children might enjoy practising their chopping skills by making a tomato based salsa or even a fruit salsa.

Do you have any dipping suggestions which your kids enjoy making and eating?
See, even as a bub she loved avocado 🙂

  1. This is so cute. I love the baby picture! My kids have always loved eating avocado, too.
    These are some great ideas. I'll have to try some.

    Alas, my son is not a dipper! Not even ketchup for his french fries. I envy moms who can get their kids to eat anything if it is dipped in ranch dressing. 🙂 My son will eat avocado spread on crackers, at least.

  3. She's gorgeous! We make guacamole sometimes too – my daughter is a big avocado fan and although she's not a 'dipper' either (funny! I thought she was the only one!) if she is involved with making the avocado dip she'll eat it too – we like it with carrot sticks.

  4. great idea 🙂

    I love the photos in this post! Avocados are such a perfect food for kids – well balanced nutritionally and they don't even require extra packaging 🙂 I was so relieved when our daughter finally started to enjoy them – but she only likes them mashed up in guacamole! By cooking with your kids, you are starting them on the road to great eating habits. Their positive experiences with food at a young age gives them a foundation to make good choices as they grow older. Kudos to you!

    My son is a big dipper. He would love to dip all foods all the time.

  7. My daughter won't eat avocado, but thankfully she loves hommus. I cut carrot, celery and sweet potatoe into really thin sticks and she loves dipping them in hommus. She also likes dipping tomato salsa.

    Thanks for the ideas. I'm making a kids cookbook for my son and my nephew for Christmas because I can't find a published one that I really like. I'll have to add the idea of guacamole. 🙂 Thanks for the links too!
