Simple Kids Sewing: Sewing Flowers

We attend a great playgroup once a week and this was one of our recent creative projects – a cardboard flower with holes punched for threading a long length of wool through. I thought it was a great idea and immediately thought to make a more permanent version for Immy’s sewing basket.

So out came the plastic canvas again. I traced the flower and cut it out. Completely unnecessarily in terms of function, I decided to thread pink wool around the outer edge of the flower to make it a little more visually appealing. Then it was ready to sew.

A perfect project for keeping little fingers busy on a cold Winter’s afternoon in front of the fire watching a favourite program with treasured friends!

Or for any quiet time really!

Just what we need! The kids have been making pom poms and sewing yoyo's for over a week now, and we need a new simple project. This is perfect, thanks Christie.

Thank you for saying so :) You could also easily add beads or sequins for an extra touch of sparkle!

Lovely, lovely, lovely! The photo of Immy with her teddy brought a big smile to my face. Will definitely do this. Thank you.

I really like this idea. I'm going to try it out with my kids. It would make a nice gift for Mother's day or Teacher's Day too.

My 3 year old would love this! He is forever threading string, rope, wool, etc through whatever he can find. I'll keep on the lookout for the plastic canvas!

This is such a good idea! The wool around the edge definitely makes the flower pop.

I love your sewing ideas with your little one but I'm wondering what you do with the finished products on the hoops. Do you display them still in the hoops or do you take them out and frame them some other way?

Some I display, Dawn. Some we undo to enjoy another day :)

Thanks again for a wonderful idea! Just what we needed after being housebound for over 10 days... The girls loved doing them this afternoon. Have posted a photo to you Facebook wall! Oh and thanks for answering Bron's question, looks like I need a trip to Spotlight :-D

This is brilliant. We used your other sewing idea (for the plastic mesh kit thingy) and my daughter loved it. She would like this too. Thanks for the idea.
