What is Anzac Day?

Anzac Day is a national day of commemoration that is observed in Australia and New
Zealand for victims of war, and in recognition of the role played by the armed forces (and supporting services) of the two countries. Anzac Day was officially nominated in 1916 as April 25, the one year anniversary of the landing of ANZAC troops on the beaches at Gallipoli.

Learning about the significance of Anzac Day helps children to understand the important part a country’s service heroes make to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. In the process children will hopefully develop empathy and respect for those who serve in the military, and gratitude for the protection a country’s armed services provide.
