Outdoor Play Mud Kitchen

Where is this playful space: New South Wales, Australia

Tell us a little about the people who play in this space
Dimples (aged 4) loves pretend play and has a great imagination, he enjoys mixing, mashing and splatting things in the outdoors while chatting away being a narrator to his own play. The mud kitchen provides the perfect space for messy play creations and Miss Cherub (nearly 1) who comes across so sweet and is such a lovely little cruiser, is on the go and trying to follow big brother every where. She’s got her hands into everything and loves exploring!

What are your children’s favourite elements of this play space?
Dimples loves the old basin sink and the cooking pans. The low surface of the kid friendly bench space means he can easily arrange the pots and pans, hanging them up or swapping them around as he plays. Miss Cherub watches by with keen eyes and loves dipping her fingers into all the buckets of natural “ingredients.” Or else you’ll find her sitting comfortably on the rubber mat and playing with her very own set of bowls.

How does this space reflect your beliefs about how children play and/or learn?
It’s all about being active, hands on, outdoors and creative. I believe kids learn best through messy, sensory play and being outdoors really connects their spirit to their environment. It provides them with a sense of calmness and freedom which is exactly what the mud kitchen does. It’s relaxing and an important creative outlet.
