St. Patrick’s Day Hands-On Addition Math Game
A few simple craft materials and a little preparation creates a fun, hands-on addition game to play this St. Patrick’s Day.
St. Patrick’s Day Addition Math Game
You will need:
- Green decorative sand
- 2 black pots
- 10 gold coins
- 10 white labels
- Permanent marker
- Index cards
- Scissors
- Plastic tray
- Gold plastic spoon
Setting up the activity:
- Cut the index cards or paper into ten small strips. Each strip needs to be big enough to write one math equation on.
- Write an addition equation on each strip of paper. Make sure the sum of each equation doesn’t match another answer. Complete this for all ten strips of paper.
- Using the white labels, write the sum of the math equations one per label.
- Place each label on a separate gold coin, until all ten coins are labeled.
- Fold each strip of paper and place them into the black pot.
- Pour the green sand into the tray.
- Bury the coins in the sand, leaving spaces between coins and cover completely.
To play:
The goal for the child is read each addition equation, answer with the sum, and find and match the equation with the coin with the sum. Once all coins are found, the activity is over and can be repeated by hiding the coins again, or creating different math equations and matching coins.
1. Pull a math equation from the black pot. Read the math equation. Answer the problem.
2. Find the matching sum to the equation buried in the sand using the spoon.
3. Once found, place the coin in the second black pot.
4. Repeat the step above until all equations have been answered correctly and all gold coins have been found.
