Making Puppets: Simple Ideas with Fabric

Yesterday I featured three simple puppet ideas to make using items commonly found around the home. Today, we have two more ideas, still relatively simple but this time using felt and stockings as a starting point.

Idea #1: Felt Finger Puppet

Step 1. Cut out two identical shapes from felt, large enough to fit your child’s fingers (suitable for an older child) or hand (better for a younger child).

Using wool or embroidery thread and a large needle, sew around the edge of the felt, older children can be shown how to do this themselves.

Step 2. Cut features from felt and glue into place with craft glue. We went with Super Chick!
And that’s it. Slip your fingers (or hand) inside and enjoy some puppet fun!

Idea #2: Stocking Puppet

Supplies
* Stocking – one knee high or the foot and calf cut from a pair of stockings will do
* Food wrap roll
* Wadding or stuffing
* Felt scraps
* Wool scraps (not shown)
* Wool needle (not shown)
* Scissors
* Craft glue

Step 1.
Stuff stocking with wadding and tie a knot to secure in place. This forms the head of the puppet.

Step 2.
Use the wool needle to attach scraps of wool for hair.

Step 3.
Cut facial features from felt and glue into place.

Step 4.
Next decorate one end of the cardboard roll, again using felt scraps. This will form the body of the puppet.

Step 5.
To attach the head to the body, push the long, loose end of the stocking through the tube and pull it out the end.

Cut a small slit in the tube to secure the end of the stocking (that way the head wont fall off!)

And you’ve finished your stocking puppet!
Now its just a matter of making a puppet theatre and you’ve got hours of fun for your children this weekend.
